In 1853, the Cummings family sold their business to Abraham Guggenheim and his sons Julius and Solomon. The Guggenheims endowed the Norwich Coffee Company with a roasting house that would remain in operation until 1967. During this time, the company produced more than two thousand pounds of coffee per year. By 1907, however, ownership of the company passed from Abraham Guggenheim to his son Julius’ widow Hannah and her son Emanuel (see below). Hannah Guggenheim died in 1928 and her son Emanuel succeeded her as head brewer at the Norwich Coffee Company. Under Emanuel’s guidance, brewing practices changed somewhat and production increased markedly; during World War II, for example, output peaked at more than four thousand pounds per year. However, by 1951–1952 due to a combination of factors—including equipment shortages caused by war effort shortages combined with increasing competition from other businesses—output had decreased slightly to just over one thousand pounds per year. Despite this decline in production rate over time – which is consistent with halving production rates every few years – HannahGuggenheim still remains an important figure within the coffee industry through her descendants (see below). The HannahGuggenheim family has been running the business continuously since 1951; apart from brief periods when they have been unable to operate because of natural disasters or illness (most notably during World War II), they have managed it without any help from outside sources whatsoever save for occasional donations from friends or family members (see below).
