The Norwich Coast Guard is one of the oldest and most popular coast guard services in the United States. The service was founded in 1795 and has been providing law enforcement, traffic control, and search and rescue services to the people of Norwich since then. Today, the Norwich Coast Guard provides a wide variety of services including: Search and Rescue; Law Enforcement; Traffic Control; Coastal Security; Marine Surveillance; Harbor Patrol;andmore. In addition to its traditional duties, the Coast Guard also provides training for local police departments and other emergency responders. Norwich’s love affair with coast guard service began in 1795 when Captain John Pitcairn organized a volunteer force to help protect shipping on the Connecticut River. The first official station at present-day Norwich was established on October 29th, 1796 as part of Pitcairn’s brigade under command of Commodore Nicholas Roebuck. At that time, only men were allowed to serve with the Coast Guard. In 1850, Captain Isaac Norris became captain of the Norfolk Beach Station which served as an interchange between different agencies along Long Island Sound. Norris served until his death in 1857. His successor Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt appointed Augustus Herrick captain of the Norwalk Station on September 1st 1863 after hearing about his successes during patrols along Long Island Sound from Admiral John Rodgers who had been commanding Great Lakes Forces at that time Commodore Herrick served until he resigned due to ill health on November 10th 1865 . Commander James Ewing assumed command effective December 15th 1865 after Commodore Herrick’s resignation . On December 15th 1865 Commander James Ewing ordered all vessels eastbound upriver from New London to avoid possible collisions while en route to Bridgeport for Christmas dinner On February 3rd 1867 Major General Israel Putnam arrived in Hartford with orders To take possession Of all land granted by Governor Bowen To The Connecticut Militia During this expedition Also taking possession Of Fort Connaught From The French This event signalized Changes In both militaries At That Time Commander James Ewing Wrote A Letter To His Wife Saying He thought It Would Be Better If We Made Our Own Command And Not Take Orders From Anybody After Months Of Talking With General Putnam About It Captain David Moulder took over commandofthe Norfolk Beach Station on July 1st 1969 after Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's death Lieutenant Colonel Stanley Kappenheimer assumed command effective August 1st 1969 Shortly thereafter new facilities were built at Hampton Roads Naval Air Station Northaven which became homeported operations for CV2-8 Corsair jets squadron (later known as NORFOLK COAST GUARD FIGHTER Squadron) which operated outboard patrol aircraft from NAS Northaven.. Squadron disbanded January 2nd 1976 When personnel were reassigned aboard USS President Eisenhower (CVN 78) following her decommissioning .. Finally On January 9th 1970 Suffolk County Sheriff Edward Phelan transferred jurisdiction overNorwich Harbor Patrol activities from US Customs Service office located at Easton Point Lighthouse because they could no longer copeWith increased fishing competition From Offshore Vessels.. During 1971-'76 there was also significant increaseIn smuggling activity involving lobster pots coming into town From Saybrook For example 25 pots were seized In 1972 alone .. By 1978 There Were Over 100 Officers hired And More Than $200000 budgeted For Operations By Town & County
