The Connecticut Naval Militia was organized in 1814 as the first military force of the state. The militia served as a guard and patrol force for the ports and harbors of the state. After the American Revolution, Connecticut became a Patriot State and its militia played an important role in maintaining law and order. In 1794, Congress passed a resolution designating Naval Militia forces to protect America's maritime interests abroad. On July 5, 1800, President George Washington signed into law a bill authorizing the creation of naval militias to defend America's coasts from potential piracy. The navy grew rapidly during the 19th century thanks to technological advances such as steamboats and submarines. By 1900, there were over 1,100 warships in service with the U.S Navy (1/3 of all active ships at that time). Norwalk was one of many communities in Connecticut which saw growth due to wartime industrial production. Naval shipyards were built here including Samuel Slater Shipbuilding Company (1910-1959), Bethlehem Steel Corporation (1912-1983) and Connally & Sons Shipbuilding Company (1920-2008). These yards produced large numbers of destroyers, submarines, merchant vessels and other naval items for both World War II and peacetime use. Many Norwalk residents played significant roles in these industries including shipbuilders, engineers, workers on warships or shore batteries or members of coastal defense agencies such as USCG Historical Services Unit No. 73 (now National Park Service). This ship was built in 1805 and was used during World War I as an Allied cruiser. It later became part of the British Navy and was renamed HMS Nelson in 1925. The HMS Victory was spray-painted with Union Jacks on both decks in memory of King George V’s flagship at Trafalgar Square when he died in battle off Cape Helles on October 19th, 1916. Another famous gift from the navy is Admiral Sir John Hawkins’ letter opener, which was presented to Lord Howe by King George III in 1775 after Hawkins had defeated a French fleet at Battle of Bunker Hill (later known as Lexington). The Letter Opener is now displayed at Whitehall Palace as part of English Heritage’s collection of Buckingham Palace memorabilia. Another important gift from the navy is Admiral David Beatty’s Danish clippership Rangoon, which was donated to Britain by Prince Bernhard in 1906 following his visit to London during that year’s coronavirus pandemic which killed millions across Europe. The clipper ship served as a floating hospital for sick passengers before being soldered to a dock near Liverpool in 1919 for conversion into an ambulance carrier called HMAS Melbourne (AO 246). After serving as Melbourne until she sunk off Tasmania on January 15th, 1994 after hitting rocks while tryingto reach Fremantle Harbour, she finally arrived at her final destination—the Docklands Light Railway Museum—on March 1st, 1996 after more than 20 years afloat!

Norwalk, Connecticut is a town located in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,594 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in Norwalk County and its county seat. The first European colonists to arrive in what is now Norwalk were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1639. In 1764 the British moved their military garrison from Hartford to Norwalk and renamed it "Norwalk." The town became a single-member district of Hartford County on March 15, 1868. Norwalk's growth as an agricultural center began with settlers coming to work in the land around Wethersfield Fairgrounds in 1892. A grain elevator and other early industrial plants were built here including one by General Electric that opened in 1904. In 1932, the town voted to become self-sufficient and established a water system which continues today. In 1941, during World War II, Norwalk joined the United States Army Air Forces as part of Project Mockingbird which aimed to intelligence gathering over enemy territory through electronic means. According to the 2000 U.S Census there are 23 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Norwalk; nine of these are contributing properties while ten are non-contributing properties
