In 1812, it became a separate town after being part of what would become Fairfield County. In 1837, Norwalk became an incorporated city with a population of 30,000 residents; however, this too diminished over time due to a variety of reasons such as falling birthrates and increasing illiteracy rates among its citizens. In 1949, the city experienced another resurgence when it merged with neighboring South Norwalk; at that time, South Norwalk had a population of 508 while Norwalk had a population of just 33,903 individuals living within its boundaries (the combined populations were only 10% larger than they are today). The growth of high-technology industries has led to increased job demand in recent years throughout much of Connecticut including Norwalks economy which has seen rapid growth since 2000. Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 22,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worthington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Norwalk" comes from Norwood and other settlements in the area. The first European settlers in what is now Norwalk were Dutch people who arrived as part of the Mayflower Compact in 1620. They used their new land to grow maize and beans, trade goods with Europe, and start a small store. In 1636 they founded a trading post on what is now State Road 9A near present-day Norwich City Hall. This early settlement was known as Newtown or New Amsterdam because it was located just outside of what would become Hartford (then called Netherfield). In 1714 an act of Parliament granted land east of Thames River to John Fenton for Plantation House which he named Westborough after his home town west of London. In 1735 Fenton sold this land to John Putnam for $1 per acre ($40 per square mile). As putnam owned more than one thousand acres in that area he divided it among his twelve children into twenty-four lots each worth $5 per acre ($160 aggregate). Each lot contained one hundred acres (forty hectares) and had two sawmills, five gristmills, thirty cows and sixty hogs on it; also three millsstreams: one beside Putnam's house at Northampton Street; another by Putnam's barn at White Sands Boulevard; and one by Colonel John Todd's mill at Great Falls Boulevard (later named Willowbrook Boulevard). These grants provided much needed farmland for development including Norwalk Village today’s downtown core which began to take shape soon after these initial grants were made public knowledge throughdrawn plans created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1721-1812), Surveyor General for Connecticut Colony under King George III.. One important factor leading up to the growth of Norwalk during this time period was its location between two major cultural centers – New York City on the north shoreline and London on the south shoreline – both expanding rapidly during this period due to technological innovations brought over by Europeans such as GPS technology. Furthermore, many Revolutionary War veterans returned home after fighting in Europe and started businesses here such as Nathaniel Gardner's rifle company “Gardner & Nichols” which manufactured rifles specifically designed for military use outfitting soldiers with accurate sights beforethey went off into battle against British forces under General George Washington Many historic buildings still standing today in downtown Norwalk include First Congregational Church built in 1802-03 (now All Souls Unitarian Church), whitesmith shop operated by Samuel Morse & Brothers from 1837 until 1861 when it closed due to financial problems caused by high costs associated with manufacturing cannons from wrought iron instead of brass/ironclad vessels like those being produced then Norwich Fairground opened October 6th 1870 located 2 blocks northwest corner High Street& Main Street organized agricultural expositionfeaturing horse Showing Agricultural implements Dairy products Poultry fine fowl etc…until burned down November 14th 1871
