New London, Connecticut is a town located in the central part of Connecticut. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is bordered to the north by Hartford, to the east by Saybrook and Groton, and to the south by Middletown. New London is one of two towns in CT (the other being West Hartford) that are not incorporated as cities. The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritan missionaries from England. The town's current form came about when its original settlers left for other towns in CT after their land grants were revoked in 1785 because they had not paid taxes on what became known as "The Town lot." Today, New London is a mainly agricultural community with a small number of businesses and residences. The main industry here is tourism which has been strong ever since it opened up along Route 9A near the Connecticut River in 1946. There are also a few manufacturing companies involved here but most work outside of agriculture or transportation/commerce. The town has an active history dating back to 1636 when English missionaries arrived here from England looking for new places to settle after their land grants were revoked due to unpaid taxes following King George II's War. In that year, Reverend John Eliot founded Congregational Church (later called First Baptist Church), which still stands today on Main Street in downtown New London. In 1815-16, Reverend James Wadsworth established Newtown Academy nearby on Prospect Street which would become one of America's leading high schools before being closed down during World War II due to wartime bombing raids; however, some remnants of that building remain today on Broadway just west of Interstate 95 near Walmart; it now serves as an event space used by local bands and events such as art shows and weddings etc.. In 1835-36 Captain Samuel Alden built Fort Alden on his farmstead southeast of modern day downtown NewLondon – this fort served as an important military post until 1785 when it was taken over by Congregationalists because they were denied land grant extensions for themselves following King George II's War - again reflecting colonial British priorities more than anything else! Afterward many new colonists came into settlements around what became known as "The Town Lot" area surrounding where Main Street now flows - including descendants of those original Puritans who had comeFarming turned into heavy industry with mills opening up all around us!
