New London, Connecticut is a town in New England and the county seat of Hartford County. The population was 26,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worcester–Bridgeport, CT Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1764 by General George Washington and was named for the new port of New London on Thames River in England. The first permanent settler in New London was John Howland, who arrived in 1764 from Rhode Island. Howland's original land grant included 640 acres (247 hectares) on which he built his house and another home for himself and his family. In 1770, Howland's son Ethan bought additional land from Howland's father for £100 sterling. Ethan set about building two cooperatives—the first known cooperative enterprise in what would become Connecticut—and naming them "Howland’s Hope" and "Ethan’s Hope." In 1814, when Hartford County was created from part of Middlesex County, New London became its county seat. The courthouse where criminal trials were held until 1872 now stands as a museum within the Town Hall complex; it is also used as an annual meeting place for the Hampden-Sydney School District board of trustees. On July 8, 1692, during King Philip's War (1689-97), British forces burned down one of the Indian villages near modern-day Hartford while raiding enemy settlements along the Greater East Anglian Peninsula; this event is commemorated by a small memorial located east of downtown on Water Street between State Streets and Main Street

In 1787, the city was renamed Hartford after George Washington's first inaugural address. It lost its status as the capital in 1837, but regained it in 1849 when New York City moved to Albany.
