The first documented coffee place in the town was called The Hamlet Coffee House on North Main Street, which opened in 1792. The coffee trade in New Haven began as early as 1776 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother-in-law, Caleb Green, opened a small shop at the corner of State and Chapel Streets. They sold beans from their home farm near present day Uniondale and imported roasted beans from Boston. It wasn't until about 1846 that an American named John Fenton established himself as a coffee roaster at 7 Congregational Churchyard Road. He continued to roast beans here until his death in 1904. In 1865, an entrepreneur by the name of Abel Wertheim purchased land along Waterbury Avenue between Main and Yale Streets and began brewing his own coffee with water Fromage de la Table (now part of PepsiCo). In 1869 he built what is now called Wertheim’s Coffee House on East Main Street – one of the earliest commercial buildings in downtown New Haven. In 1895 Wertheim merged with his friend Isaac Haas to form Pabst Brewing Company; this company would continue operations until 1993 when it was bought by Anheuser Busch Brewery Incorporated.
