By 1810, all but two buildings in town were built on wharves. The town became an important seaport for smuggling during the Revolutionary War and it provided a safe haven for British troops after they evacuated Boston. In 1920, New Britain joined the United States and its marines began patrolling the waters off Long Island. The marines continued patrols until 1975 when they were replaced by Coast Guard officers. Today, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is located within the boundaries of New Britain.

They named their new land "Newbury" after the ancient royal estate in England that they had seen on their visit. In 1614, Sir Richard Mathers bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of this land and founded what became known as Mathers Manor house near modern day Hartford, CT. The First Congregational Church was built here in 1638 and it remains one of the largest churches in New Britain today. During much of its early history, New Britain suffered from a lack of access to education and health care which contributed to its high rate of poverty and social unrest during the 18th century; however, over time these challenges have been slowly overcome as various private businesses have provided essential services such as healthcare and education to residents. Today, NewBritain is an excellent community with strong ties to its rural neighbor across miles (and sometimes centuries) of open countryside where people are engaged in all sorts of cultural experiences: farming, fishing, hunting/fishing trips through local rivers etc., horseback riding or hiking among others. The town was named after a small village in Flanders, Netherlands, which they had visited while on their way to establish the colony. The first settler in New Britain was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1660. In 1668, settlers from Massachusetts established a nearby settlement and called it Providence. In 1701, the Town of Newtown merged with the neighboring Village of East Windsor into one municipality. In 1873, the Town of New Britain split into two municipalities again: North New Britain and South Newbury. In 1978, South Newbury became one municipality once again and North Newbury became an independent community. In 1995, Hartford became one municipality once again and NorthNewbury separated from Hartford to form its own community.
