New Britain, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. New Britain is part of the Hartford–Worcester–New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Britain were the Dutch in 1624 and the French in 1635. The name "New Britain" was given to the area by General James fortifying it during his military campaign against Native Americans in 1644-46. It became part of England as part of what was known as the Province of Connecticut on November 15, 1662. In 1701, English settlers founded Wethersfield (now Westport) nearby and soon after that other settlements including North Branford and Easton. During the American Revolutionary War (1775-83), New Britain sided with Great Britain but when war broke out in April 1776, its inhabitants neutrality caused them much embarrassment since they had nothing to contribute militarily to their country’s cause other than their home town which lay just across from British forces quartered there at Sayville Heights onethird mile east of downtown Hartford.
