Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,912 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Hartford County and one of its seven municipalities. The name Naugatuck comes from the Potowatomie word Na-gatha meaning "a small stream" or "river". The first permanent settler in what would become Naugatuck was Nicholas Goodrich in 1692. At that time the area included what are now portions of Waterbury, Stamford and Derby counties. Goodrich named his new town after his native land on the Ohio River near Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1701, Samuel Phelps purchased some of Goodrich's land and moved to Naugatuck with his family. By 1800 there were over 20 families living in Naugatucktown (now part of Waterbury). In 1821, General Nathan Bedford Forrest launched an unsuccessful attack against Fort Stevens on Long Island Sound near New York City; this ended up leading to American independence as well as fortification of New York Harbor by England. As a result of this event many settlers left for southern states such as Virginia and Massachusetts during the antebellum period because they could not secure passage through English ports at that time. Naugatuck experienced rapid growth following American independence when many soldiers Returning from war brought their wives and children with them to join them in America’s growing economy. Many new stores were built along Main Street during this time including two banks which opened their doors on May 1st 1824: The First National Bank and John Cushing’s Store No 2 (now The First State Bank). This influx of people caused social unrest which led to the formation of a local militia company known as “The Riflemen” on September 25th 1825 under Captains George Knoppers and James Fenton while Major John Sibley served as Commandant until November 1830 when he resigned due to ill health; Captain Fenton took command but soon resigned again due to illness before ever taking action against Indians! One milestone occurred on June 21st 1828 when Nathaniel Pendleton became Postmaster General under President Jackson signed into law by Jackson himself US mail service Act No 28 – making it easier for Ulysses S Grant to communicate with his generals throughout America rather than having them carry letters home across country! A year later post office operations were transferred from Saybrook to Naugatuck allowing for more convenient access for farmers who had long been using delivery services instead of traveling long distances for deliveries! On July 6th 1830 Ethan Allen published an open letter called An Appeal To Our CountryMENSTRUATION TIME SHOULD BE PAID BY THE PEOPLE NOT THE STATE AND THIS WAS APPROVED BY MAJOR GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FOREST ON MAY 10TH 1830 AT A MEETING CALLED “THE GATHERING OF ALL OUR OFFICERS” AFTER HE HAD CONFIRMED THAT PENDLETON WOULD NO LONGER HAVE ANY ROLE IN PROVIDING THEM WITH MAIL SERVICE! Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Naugatuck was Jabez Bowen from Great Britain in 1684. Bowen and his family built a log cabin on the site of present day Naugatuck Elementary School. A post office called Naugatuck was established in 1809, and continued to be operated until 1892. In 1886, one of the townships within Hartford County was organized as part of an effort to improve transportation between Hartford and Stamford. The original townships were increased in size byadding land around what is now Old Bridge Road (later UConn Avenue). The name for the new township was changed to Naugatuck Township on October 2nd, 1886. At that time it included all of what is now Middlebury Township and parts of Watertown and Easton townships as well as most of what is now Webster Groves Township including present day Webster Hall Road (now State Street). In 1912, when Connnecticut became a state, Naugatuck became one of its initial communities within the newly created state capital city of Norwich. On July 1st 1914 NaugatUCK had a population over 10K with businesses like J&J Blacksmiths (), Hardware Store (), Odd Fellows Hall () (), Masonic Lodge No 4 (), Baptist Church (). On November 15th 1917 during World War I Union troops burned down the old Methodist church located on present day Main Street while fighting near where Patriot Avenue meets Elm Street just east of present day Brown’s Inn restaurant which still stands today despite being extensively damaged by fire three times since then . According to local legend this event marks "the end" for that particular congregation; however there has never been any evidence whatsoever to back up such claims beyond anecdotal evidence or no more information available after more than 100 years
