Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,827. It is the most populous municipality in Hartford County and second-most populous municipality in Connecticut after Bridgeport. The Naugatuck River forms much of its eastern border and flows through the town. The original inhabitants of what is now Naugatuck were Algonquian Indians who had been living there for centuries before European settlers arrived. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now NaugatUCK were Dutch traders from Rotterdam who landed on Long Island in 1624. They named their new settlement New Netherland after their home city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. As more English colonists arrived in New England during the mid-1600s, they began to populate what is now Naugatuck with their own people. In 1677, Ulysses S. Grant bought land near present-day Naugatuck for $1 and started to build a house that would become his rancho el Caballo de la Huída (The Horse's Neck). Grants became one of the prominent landowners in southeastern Connecticut and built other estates along the river until his death in 1853. His son Cyrus Grant sold most of his holdings to General William Henry Harrison during his 1836 visit to southeastern Connecticut as part of his tour of America. After Harrison's death, many members of Congress purchased grants or portions thereof over time; some continue to be used today by local government entities such as town councils and school boards. In 1784 Governor John Winthrop brought over 300 farmers from Massachusetts under auspices of building an experimental farm at Groton – which eventually became Groton Heights – called Easton’s Swamp (later West Windsor). By 1800 about two thirds (some sources say all)of households in Hartford County were composed exclusively or almost exclusively of yeoman farmers. Many early residents were Huguenots who had fled France during the French Revolution; others came from Germany and Austria."From 1784 until1801 only men could vote," although women soon gained voting rights.
A large number (>80%)of residences still standing on Main Street between Northampton Road (now Route 9) and Crossroads Boulevard date back to this period when families lived close together on small lots with shared fields or gardens. Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. It was incorporated on February 14, 1796. The population was 21,751 at the 2010 census. Naugatuck is located near the center of Hartford and is bordered by the towns of West Hartford and East Hartford to the north and west, Watertown to the east, and Windsor to the south. The first European settlers were two brothers named Nicholas and Samuel Gerrish who founded a farm in 1636 on what is now Payne's Hill in Naugatuck. They were followed by other farmers over time as more land was acquired for settlement in this area. In 1795, Naugatuck became part ofHartford Township when that township was created from parts of WestHartford Township, EastHartford Township, Madison Township and part of New Britain Township. Naugatuck's history can be traced back to 18th century England where it was known as "Newington". There are several theories attributing why this name changed; one theory suggests that an early resident discovered fresh water sources close by which led to its choice as a site for a mill. A second theory suggests that due to its location near Foxwoods Resort Casino (now part of Mohegan Sun casino), Newington became associated with gambling activities which may have helped draw people there during times when such behavior was illegal in England. In 1837-38 Englishman John King built his sawmill on what is now Main Street just south of State Street in Naugatuck after purchasing land from Native American Simonteecktouchewahamunkee (simonteeck) for $2 per acre ($140 acres). By 1840 John King had replaced his sawmill with a gristmill which operated until 1862 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by lightning。 In 1867-68 James Fenton built a house on what is now First Avenue which he called "Fenton's Grove" (). According to 2000 US Census data,[1] there are 21,751 residents living within town limits including 3% non-residents who identify themselves as Italian or Hispanic/Latino while 8% reside outside the town boundaries while all other races make up less than 1% each (estimated). As stated previously poverty rates vary greatly within town limits with 15%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 50% percentiles observed among those making under $10K annually while 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40% percentiles exist among those making over $100K annually according 2%.
