The history of the Naugatuck Army National Guard begins in 1795, when a small detachment of Connecticut militia was called to duty by General George Washington in response to the British Invasion of America. The unit served for two years, then was disbanded. In 1824, the Connecticut Militia were re-raised and appointed as part of the Continental Army under General George Washington. The regiment served until 1775, during which time they participated in numerous battles and campaigns. After the war ended, the Connecticut Militia withdrew from service and formed a separate regiment known as Company C (Naugatuck Guards). During World War II, Company D (NaugatUCK Regiment) mobilized and served overseas with distinction including participation in Normandy and Holland 1944. Upon their return home they were redesignated as Headquarters Battery 4th Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment Rhode Island National Guard on July 1st 1945. In 1951 they amalgamated with Headquarters Battery 5th Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment Rhode Island National Guard to form Headquarters Battery 4th/7th Infantry Regiment Rhode Island National Guard at Naugatuck High School although battery continued to exist separately until 1957 when it became attached to 2nd Brigade Combat Team 10th Mountain Division Reserve Component located at Fort Drum barracks New York state A total of 362 individuals have been decorated with various awards or medals for their service within the U.S armed forces since Confederation through present day including: 11 generals; 157 lieutenant general officers; 54 brigadier generals; 353 major general officers; 172 captaincies; 3 corps commanders; 214 battalion commanders; 606 brigade commanders
