Milford is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. The town seat is Milford and the largest incorporated village in Tolland County. It is part of the New London–Hartford–Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Milford were traders and pilgrims who set out from Hartford on October 12, 1624, seeking religious sanctuary after being shipwrecked off Long Island. They landed at Shinnecock Bay on September 20 and journeyed upriver until they reached what is now Milford on October 12. A mill built by Nicholas Ives in 1796 began grinding flour for local markets; this mill continued to operate until 1941 when it was replaced by a large post-war steel plant which closed in 1969.
