Milford, Connecticut has been a coffee town for over 100 years and the history of coffee is intertwined with that of the town. The first mention of coffee in Milford is from 1892 when the German immigrants to America started importing beans from Germany. They called their coffee "Koffee von Amerika." Coffee was not popularized in England until 1796 when a group of entrepreneurs bought up all the bean fields around London and started roasting it themselves. In 1876, John Hetherington founded The Hetherington Coffee Company in Milford with his brother-in-law Edwin Ewing as manager. In 1898, The Hetherington Coffee Company merged with The Peet's Coffee Co., making Milford one of the largest coffee towns in New England. After World War I, many farmers left Milford because there were no markets for their beans after the war. However, some Millers persisted and reopened their businesses which led to today’s large number of coffeehouses and cafes within walking distance of each other. Today's roasted coffee products are made by three main companies: Peet's, Dutch Bros., and Koffee Klatch. Each company has its own specific style which can be tasted at any local cafe or market place in town (though Dutch Bros.' products are typically more expensive). Some notable landmarks associated with these companies include Peet's Building on Main Street where employees used to handpick beans; Dutch Bros.' former location at 203 State Street which now houses Pizzeria Paradiso; and Koffee Klatch's original location on Bridge Street near US1 between Hartford Avenue and Elm street

It is the smallest municipality in Fairfield County and one of the most rural in the state. The town was platted on December 12, 1810 by Captain John Smith who named it for his birthplace and native village of Milford in England. The first post office was established in 1821. Milford's history can be traced back to 1778 when Major George Washington's troops burned down barns and homes near present-day Main Street to prevent British forces from occupying the area. In 1824, Milford became part of Hartford Township after being split from Norwich Township due to its smaller population size. In 1840, a sawmill was built on what is now South Main Street; this millinery business remains active today as Wellera Sawdust Incorporated. In 1851, when Hartford Township was disbanded and merged into newly organizedFairfield County, Milford became an unincorporated community within Fairfield County with its own police department. On May 15, 1893 referendum vote passed by voters in both townships to annex into neighboring West Simsbury Township which had been formed two years earlier following a merger of East Simsbury Township and North Simsbury Township. This annexation created what is now known as "The collided Towns", as there were now two towns that were not just annexed but also had their own government - something that still occurs today with regard to various annexations across Fairfield County." In 1938,[1] GEICO built a $5 million[2] shopping mall in downtown Milford which served as the mainstay of the local economy until it closed its doors in 2011 amid economic decline around the nation during late 2007-2011 recession era.[3] One mile away from downtown Milford sits Mount Union University where students have attended since 1638 according to campus archives;[4] however much like other small towns throughout Connecticut (and many others nationally),Mount Union has seen difficulty keeping up withthe larger surrounding municipalities while struggling through several tough economic times over recent decades including numerous budget deficiences,[5][6][7][8][9][10] culminating with Mount Union University having its largest financial shortfall ever reported by university officials last year despite efforts by local leaders including Mayor Joe Ganim[11])

Many businesses have been founded or continue to operate in Milford including Unitarian Universalist Association Congregational Church which serves as a landmark for downtown Milford, The Daily News newspaper company which once published its headquarters in downtown Milford before moving out into new building nearby in 1978, Alfred P. Sloan School of Business at Yale University which has become one of America's most prestigious business schools and Wellesley College which provides education for women from pre-Kindergarten through college degrees

The first permanent settler in what is now Milford was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1636 and built a house on Meetinghouse Hill. The first store in what is now Milford opened in 1792. In 1837, under president Andrew Jackson, Milford became a town and soon after attained full city status. In 1881, Norwich University founded its school there which remains an important part of the community to this day. In 1966, when Hartford-based Xerox Corporation moved its corporate headquarters to Stamford, Conn., Milford became one of Xerox's two main satellite locations outside of North America; it still has that distinction today. In recent years, much progress has been made to revitalize downtown Milford with new development including high-end condos and apartments as well as a professional sports stadium (the former home of the New England Patriots).
