Middletown is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 17,851 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of New Haven and West Hartford counties. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1623 as part of the land granted to them by King George II after they successfully revolted against his rule. Middletown became an incorporated town on April 14, 1835. In 1912, it annexed part of West Hartford County to form a new municipality. In 1925, the towns of East Windsor and North Whitney merged into Middletown to form a single municipality also named Middletown with a population of 23,000 residents. The name change was prompted by an incident that occurred during the 1926 mayoral election when incumbent Mayor Averill Harriman ran for re-election but lost to Democrat John Pappas despite campaigning under the slogan "Middletown is my home". On July 1, 1960, Middletown became one of fifty communities within the newly createdHartford metropolitan area pursuant to PL 6-1 (the Townhood Redevelopment Act). On December 5, 1990 it passed an ordinance creating its own school board which has been in place ever since. On November 3rd 2006 voters adopted a referendum proposing that Middletown become one community within Hartford's newly formed Special Districtsplanning agency - Clifton Park/Norwalk/Ledyard The community had high school students from grades 7 through 12 until 2009 when all schools closed due to cuts made by local government officials in response to state budget constraints set forth by then Governor Joe Lieberman as well as other government austerity measures taken throughout most municipalities across Connecticut following 9/11/. Most notably this included closing every high school located within walking distance or less than five miles of any city center excepting downtown Stamford;[2] these same parents have continued to send their children to private schools while they work during middle and post-secondary school years if they wish; however public education is available at both Branford Regional High School and South Windsor Senior High School now that those schools are open again after being closed for budgetary reasons for many years due to lack of money from local government coffers caused largely by state mandated financial reform initiatives enacted during Joe Lieberman’s tenure as governorbeginning with dramatic reductions in state support for prekindergarten through 12th grade education statewide beginning in 2002 known popularly as “Pepsiification” which had begun taking hold even earlier among some educators not directly impacted thereby making Head Start Programs less available statewide) It should be noted that while much has changed since September 11th 2001 including closures of many public educational institutions throughout Connecticut,[3] much remains unchanged includingparental choice regarding private schooling although there has been somewhat more political correctness practiced recently among governmental officials overall who continue communicate primarily through televised press conferences rather than personal visits which allows parents greater opportunityto ask questions face-to-face about what actions or policies will impact their children whether those decisions include Closing Our Schools Or Moving Them To Another State
