The Ethiopian Coffee House was founded in 1894 by two British immigrants, Ernest and Fanny Wright. Ernest started out as a barista and soon realized that he could create better quality coffee than what was available from commercial stores. In 1923, Fanny Wright joined her husband at the Ethiopian Coffee House and quickly became an important figure within the business. She helped develop roast flavors, made sure all ingredients were fresh, and developed marketing strategies. Over time, both Ernest and Fanny Wright passed away but their legacy lives on through their children who continue to run the Ethiopian Coffee House today. One of the first commercially successful artisan coffee shops was opened in New York City in 1912 by Dutch immigrant Cornelius van den Boer. He named his shop "Koffiekamer" (coffee room). It wasn't until after World War II that java cafes began to proliferate across America due to post-war rationing policies. During this time period, it was often difficult for small businesses to get access to quality beans so entrepreneur David Schultz set up his own roasting company in 1950s Middletown called Schultz's Java Shop.
