The Connecticut Army National Guard has a rich history in Middletown, dating back to 1776. The first units of the guard were organized in 1776 as part of the Continental Army and fought in the battles of Bunker Hill and Saratoga. The unit’s name was changed to the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1802 and served until 1861. After the Civil War, the regiment operated as a militia force until it was disbanded in 1865. The first unit of the modern army, called “The Connecticut Army National Guard”, was established on July 12, 1903. It consisted of 7 companies: 3 infantry companies (1 artillery company), 1 cavalry company (1 gunnery platoon), 1 engineer company (2 platoons), 1 signals company (1 platoon), 1 medical detachment (1 platoon) and 4 sharpshooters teams. It was activated at Camp Putnam near Middletown under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Hemenway. In World War I, members from both battalions served together during France-landers offensive against Germans along Ypres salient between October 1914 and November 1915. On November 6th 1915 they relieved French troops along that line who had been besieged by German forces for two weeks prior to their relief operation having failed due to bad weather conditions which made trench warfare extremely difficult; this action is also known as “the Battle at Ypres” or Menin Road Offensive. In January 1916 all units were transferred from Putnam Camp to Fort Monroe where they remained for three years before being mustered out on August 14th 1918 at West Point Naval Base New York City; these men later became United States military veterans or referred to as “Post-War Veterans” or P-WV’s. When ratified by Congress on February 15th 1920 each battalion had an authorized strength of 2 officers and 30 enlisted men with 2 batteries per battalion; however only one battery was actually ever deployed during World War I with Company E serving with British Expeditionary Force at Arras/Passchendaele Ridge from March 1917 until April 1918; this battery is now known as Battery KA3/7th CT AIF & CO
