Meriden is a town in Connecticut and the county seat of Hartford County. The population was 50,782 at the 2010 census. It is included in the New London metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Meriden were traders from Bristol, England, who landed on Long Island Sound in 1624. A grant of land to these Englishmen by the Dutch in 1664 led to further development of this area as a farming community with homes built near the river and cranberry bushes growing along its banks. Meriden became an incorporated town on April 14, 1814, when it was merged with Hartford County. The townsite located at present-day Main Street and State Road 27 had been surveyed by Nicholas Easton in 1799–1800 for use as part of his western boundary forHartford County. During World War II, much activity took place at Naval Air Station Seymour Johnson (later known as Naval Air Station Patuxent River) located about east of Meriden on North Haven Avenue near Woodbridge Road. This airfield served both American and Japanese military forces during World War II: 1) As an American airbase; 2) As a Japanese airbase used primarily for night operations; 3) As the main base for training pilots and aircraft mechanics during World War II; 4) As one of three USAAF bases RAF Bentwaters was also based at nearby here until it closed in 1958; 5) And finally as an army post during peacetime until its closure in 1974 after being merged with other army installations around Connecticut into Headquarters First Army division headquarters). Many large hangars were constructed here including those associated with Lockheed Martin's Avionics Development Laboratory (ADL), which later became part of Boeing Aircraft Co.. The plant produced jetliners such as Northrop Grumman's P-8 Poseidon multirole maritime patrol plane and Embraer EJ- subsurface warfare planes such as Rafael Advanced Seamanship Systems' EA-6B Pogo . In recent years there has been redevelopment taking place in downtown Meriden spurred by plans made available by developer Harry Connick Jr., son of then Mayor Edward Maternal Connick Jr.. In addition to new housing developments along Main Street between Meeting Street/Route 27A & Newmark Place/State Road 27B, commercial properties have also been developed including several stores adjacent to IHOP restaurant complex (formerly owned by JCPenney). Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1764 by the Meriden family of England. The name means "mouth of the river," and it has been spelledmeriden, meridenet, and more recently meriden. The town was incorporated on November 15, 1824. On October 14, 1845, the town purchased from Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail a tract of land lying east of present-day Main Street between New London Avenue and Wellesley Road for $3 per acre (0.88 km²). This purchase made Meriden one of the largest towns in Hartford County. In 1850, when Connecticut ratified its first Constitution with voting rights for all citizens over 21 years old, Meriden voted to become a part of the state as well. In 1868–69 two trunk lines were built through Meriden by the Hartford & Springfield Railroad connecting Seymour to Springfield and Danbury toHartford; this action helped spur economic development withinMeriden village which had been struggling since before railroad construction began there in 1865. In 1870–71 three new churches were built: St John's Episcopal Church (1870), First Congregational Church (1871), and Christ Episcopal Church (1872). These churches served as iconic symbols ofMERIDEN'S PROGRESSIVE ERA since they were designed by architect George Hennepin in neo-Gothic style which characterized MERIDEN during these years; prior to that most buildings were simple log cabins with gabled roofs typical of IRELANDAN CITIES OF THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY In 1916 MERIDEN became home to America's first high school for girls - High School for Girls meridianHigh School – now known as Middlebury College – opened its doors after several years of planning and fundraising led by Mrs Hughes who also donated land for schools on both sides of Main Street near where today’s High School stands In 1921 MERIDEN joined forces with Granby to form Granby annexed intoMERIDEEN on July 1st 1923 following incorporation proceedings initiated by Mayor Wm Safford Prior to this merger there had been intermittent efforts by both towns councils to consolidate their functions but no formal annexation proceedings took place due largely to cultural differences between MERIDEEN’S TWO COMMUNITIES .Now that both communities are located within one municipality it can be said that MERIDEEN BECAME A PUBLIC SCHOOL FULLY INDEPENDENT FROMHARTFORD COUNTY GOVERNMENT
Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,717 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the English word "meridian", meaning line of march or boundary. The first permanent settler in Meriden was Nicholas Baynard in 1664. He purchased land north of the river and began to apportion it among his family and friends. He named his new town after himself, as he saw it as a place where people would "frequent". In 1701, George Washington passed through Meriden on his way to battle with the British forces at Lexington and Concord. When he reached Meriden Junction near modern-day North Stonington, Massachusetts, he stopped for dinner with Nicholas Baynard and others who had gathered there to await him. When General John Putnam arrived in Hartford County in 1727, he took possession of all of what is now central Connecticut including much of what is now Meriden Township. At that time most of the current townships were peripheral areas existing only within Hartford County because they had been acquired by other counties when those lands were split between Hartford and New Haven Counties during the early years of our county formating process. Most notably Arequipa Road went from Weymouth to Tolland before splitting off again into Tolland Township (now Waterbury) & Meriden Township (now Hartford). It should be noted that these distinctions did not exist until well after Putnam's death in 1771 which means that many village boundaries may have already changed prior to this date! Ibid In 1837 Samuel Morse built a house on School Hill east of present day Main Street in what is today known as Morse Square after becoming one of America's first telephone Pioneers. This house still stands today and can be seen from Broadwalk Avenue across the street
