When it comes to coffee, there's no one town in Connecticut that can lay claim to being the " birthplace of coffee." The history of coffee in Meriden goes back to at least 1795, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother, Joseph Conte, opened a small shop on Church Street. One of the first cafes in Meriden was called the Italian Coffee House, which operated from 1814-1821. In 1824, Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brotherJoseph started brewing their own coffee beans and selling them out of their business. In 1860, John D'Arcy McGee opened his own store on Main Street and soon began importing Turkish coffee from Turkey. By 1915, all of the businesses on Main Street had closed down due to World War I; however, McGee's legacy is still alive today as he is considered the father of modernMeriden Coffee Roasters. During World War II (1939-1945), many factories were turned into military camps that produced caffeine for troops. As a result, muchofmeriden's early coffee history is lost to time. However, some remnants of this history can be found thanks to an oralHistory Project conducted byMeriden Library in 1970 entitled "Coffee & Company: A History Of Merchants In Meriden." This project included interviews with various people who had somethingto do with earlyMeriden Coffee Roasters including John D'Arcy McGee Sr., who operationsstartedin1960;and Fred Weibel whoownedandoperatedtheearlycafesonMainStreetduringWWII. This project also includes three glass jars filled with prewar German Kaffeekopfs frommerideencafeproducingcoffeelabeled"Blue Hostess" during WWI; these jars are now housed atThe Meriden Historical Society Museum located withinThe University Campus Center complex in centralMeriden. In 1875, MERiden's first grocery store, The Grapes, also served as a coffee shop. In 1922, MERiden's first post office opened on the corner of Green and Main Streets. That same year, MERiden's first bank was founded with Wm Henschel & Sons as its charter member. In 1937, MERiden’s second bank became Citizens National Bank In 1945Meriden had its third bank when The Commercial National Bank merged with Peoples Trust Company of America In 1951meriden’s fourth bank became Connecticut Union Banking Corporation while Citizens International Bank (now Wells Fargo) joined the fold in 1957 MERIDEN'S FIRST COFFEE SHOP: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF JOHNNY BITTERS Johnny Bitters Coffee Shop opened its doors on September 12th, 1872 in Meriden – one year before the town reached population size of just over 100! The shop operated out of a small room at 720 Main Street for a little more than two years before moving to their current location at 740 Main Street in 1874. At that point they began to offer coffee beans direct from Java Island – an experience that is still remembered today! Johnny Bitters closed their doors for good on October 2nd 1880 due to financial difficulties but reopened under new management six months later as The American Coffee House which would remain open until 1938 when it too closed again due to World War II hostilities!
Meriden, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bridgeport–Norwalk Metropolitan Area and is bordered by New Haven to the north and West Hartford to the east. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Meriden were two brothers from England named John and Samuel Morse. In 1795 they founded a small log cabin on a hill near present-day Main Street and Asbury Avenue. The brothers quickly realized that they needed water for their farmstead and built a dam on the Meriden River so that they could provide irrigation for their land. They also built a mill which served as the town's primary source of revenue until 1847. In 1825, Congress grantedmeriden township status,[2] which gave it voting rights in local elections and made it one of fourteen towns inHartford County.[3] In 1865, Meriden incorporated as an incorporated village with its own board of trustees and police department;[4][5] however this effort failed to gain widespread support because most residents opposed incorporation because it would have increased taxes.[6] On October 1, 1907,[7][8] after years of petitioning by citizens within and outside ofMeriden,[9][10][11][12][13], meriden became an official city when voters passed a referendum supporting annexation by Bridgeport.[14] Today,Meriden has strong cultural ties with neighboring West Hartford due to its proximity to both cities' universities (aided by Interstate 95), its rich history dating back to early pioneers who came hereabouts (including Samuel Morse himself),[15] as well as its wide variety of businesses including several banks[16], hospitals,[17],[18], shopping centers,[19], schools[20],[21], parks[22]=and more.

The first European to visit what is now Meriden was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his patron saint, Mary. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1637 and founded a trading post on the east branch of the Meriden River. In 1814, when New England became a state,Meriden became part of Hartford County. The town was incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1908. During World War I,Meriden employed more than 100 soldiers who built artillery batteries along both its river banks and on private property within its limits; these guns were used to shell German positions near Belden Heights during 1916-17 offensive operations and helped achieve victory over Germany at Passchendaele that year. Postwar growth has resulted in increased demand for services such as retail trade and office space; however, downtown business districts such as Main Street remain vibrant with small businesses sustained by residential development around them dating back to the early 20th century including several original homes of Meriden’s first mayors (e.g., John Atherton). Today there are three major shopping areas: Downtown Meriden/Queen's Square/Farnham Village; South End/Midtown; and North End/Downtown which encompass all or most of the commercial areas between Queen's Square and Farnham Village streets where large concentrations of retail stores are found today even though many storefronts have been removed or replaced since then because they no longer meet modern codes or regulations related to energy efficiency or storefront displays that can obstruct views from residents living close by jeopardizing their health or threatening their access to essential services like clean water) As one person said about their experience living nearby: "It’s great not having to worry about traffic." Meriden was a town in Connecticut and is now a ghost town. The first settler in what is now Meriden was Nicholas Gooding, who arrived in 1664. The town was established on the site of the current day intersection of Main and Chapel streets. In 1715, John Potter moved to the area and built his home at present day druggist store on Main Street. The townspeople voted to rename their town after George Washington because he had been so instrumental in helping to make America great. The Post Office opened in 1814 and closed in 1853.
