Meriden, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,781 at the 2010 census. The town is on the Meriden River and is part of the Greater Hartford Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Meriden were in 1614 when William Bradford and his party discovered land that would become Hartford County. In 1765, James Caldwell bought some of the original land that makes up today's Meriden from Nicholas Westcott.Meriden was incorporated as a town on February 2, 1824. On November 6 of that year, a fire destroyed most of downtown Meriden and damage to many other buildings throughout the town contributed to its name change three years later. In 1834, Samuel Morse established himself as a mercantile business man in what was then rural Meriden and quickly became one of America's leading telephone providers with his Morse Telephone Company (later renamed TCI). For over two centuries he has been an important figure in the community - both as mayor and owner/operator of several businesses including grocery stores (Samuel Morse Produce), post office (mercifully still open today after being closed for decades), banks (FirstMerit Bank) and more recently healthcare clinician services company called Meridian Health Partners LP . He passed away August 14th 2018 at age 91 after a long life filled with many accomplishments in our community

Meriden is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Meriden arrived in 1638 by ship from England. William Davenport and his family were among the first to purchase land here. They built their home on what is now Main Street, and started a small grocery store that still stands today. In 1814, John Morse moved to Meriden from West Haven and opened the first post office in this town. In 1836, two brothers named Pickering bought land here for $2 per acre (the site of current Meeting House Square). They began developing it into an agricultural community with several sawmills, grist mills and other businesses. The Pickering Brothers Bridge Company built a bridge over the river nearpresent-day North Campus Road in 1872 which helped bring prosperity to this community during its early years. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a city on April 14th, 1912; however they were unable to raise enough money to make it all work out and failed to re-elect themselves as officials until October 3rd of that year. On July 1st of 1914, Meriden became one of the last towns in Connecticut to enter into effect with prohibition laws taking effect nationwide that day; however they repealed their prohibition ordinance three days later when federal troops invaded Connecticut without warning residents Meriden experienced some significant growth following its incorporation as an independent city; including new housing developments such as Wellesley Drive/Fenway Park which were completed between 1915 and 1916 As part of this development, adjacent farmland was developed for industrial use including Wetherill Laboratories which was founded by George Wetherill in 1923 based upon his discovery of nylon – becoming one of America's largest nylon manufacturers
