The Connecticut Air National Guard's 159th Fighter Wing is the only active duty fighter wing in the United States. The wing is a descendant of the 106th Pursuit Squadron, which was activated on 8 November 1917 at Meriden Army Air Station. The squadron served with distinction World War I and World War II before being disbanded in 1945. In 1949, the 169th Fighter-Bomber Wing was activated at Bradley Army Air Field, Florida and became part of Tactical Air Command (TAC). Inactivated in 1992, it was reactivated as the 159th Fighter Wing on 1 October 1994 at Meriden Army Air Station after being stationed there since 1951. The wing has been a part of Continental United States Aerospace Forces since its activation. The Connecticut Air National Guard's 141st Fighter Wing donated a Boeing 727-200 to the Meriden community in 1984. The wing also donated a Cessna 182 to the town in 1993. In 2006, the 141st Fighter Wing contributed an F-15E Eagle aircraft to the Meriden Fire Department.
Meriden is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Norwalk-Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Meriden arrived during the colonial period and began practicing their trade as farmers. In 1701, John Winthrop, an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of Boston, settled in what would become Meriden after moving from Rehoboth Beach, Massachusetts. In 1814, British mathematician George Stephenson built the railroad between Norwich and Bridgeport which led to more people moving intoMERIDEN. By 1830 there were over 2,000 residents living in MERIDEN. In 1860 MERIDEN had a papermill and machine shop which until 1830 produced all paper products for the town except groceries and shoes made by local women who did not have access to mechanized production methods then or now. Paper products continued to be produced until 1967 when they were replaced by electronic printing technologies which continue to be used in the present day.. Meriden has long been home to a number of cultural icons including vocalist Ray Charles (the town's only resident) and author Sammy Davis Jr.'s mother Effie Davis (whose novel "You Are My Sunshine" was set partially or entirely in MERIDEN). The town also hosts annual events such as its own music festival (known as "Thefest") as well as international festivals such as StroudFest and PembrokeFest each year.

Finally, on October 10th 1998 Congress passed into lawthe Air Force Memorial Act which designated November 10th as “National Defense Service Day” in order to commemorate this unique history and continue to recognize Air Force enlisted members who make extraordinary contributions to our nation’s defense. The first major gift that the United States Air Force received came during World War I when it contributed over 1 million pounds of goods and equipment valued at $2 million dollars to Allied war effort. On November 10th 1945 President Harry Truman presented General James Forrestal with a Cadillac automobile as being part of America’s " appreciate military" gesture following World War II victory over Nazi Germany. This significant gift marked oneof America's most important peacetime achievements and also helped establish American dominance over Europe after World War II began. Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,907 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the MetroHartford area. The first settler in what is now Meriden was Nicholas White, who arrived in 1636. He built a cabin on the east bank of the South Branch of the Trimount Brook and named it White's Ferry. By 1814, white settlers had created a village on land they had purchased from John Northrup and others at what is now North Main Street and Washington Avenue. They called their new community "Meriden." In 1827, residents adopted a resolution to name their town after Josephine Butler whose husband Colonel George Butler served as Mayor from 1824 to 1830 (and again from 1834 until his death). In 1841, Meriden became an educational postgraduate center when Yale University established its campus there. It remains one of Yale's many campuses today with over 55 years of continuous operation. In 1907–08, Meriden was selected as site for the United States Military Academy at West Point which opened in 1909; it has been alternately known as East Point or New York Military Academy since then. The population of Meriden began to decline during World War II due to wartime shortages in housing and jobs; however, by 1950 its population had increased back up to 21,907 thanks largely to Interstate 95 construction that linked it with other towns within Hartford County (the route still passes through town) and neighboring Stamford Connecticut communities during that period.
