Hartford is a small town in southeastern Connecticut. The population was 30,615 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Connecticut after Hartford-Worcester. The main industries of Hartford are health care and education. The first Europeans to visit Hartford were two Dutchmen, Hendrick van den Bergh and Jan Huygens, on October 25, 1624. They named the area "New Netherland" because they had just discovered it and thought it would be a good place to set up a trading post because of its rich minerals and natural resources. The English Crown granted land to George Washington in 1784 for his new capital city - what is now Philadelphia - but General James Clinton took over the responsibility for building the capital when Washington died in 1797. In 1814, Congress passed an act which designated Hartford as America's third largest city following New York City and Philadelphia. The growth of trade during the 19th century led to economic development in Hartford which led to more people moving into the town from other parts of Connecticut and New England. By 1920, there were almost 26,000 people living in Hartford proper while only 10% of that number lived within walking distance of any business or service center; today that figure has increased to over 50%. In 1915, Mayor John Taunton founded the CT Council on Aging which served as a model for similar organizations throughout Connecticut until 1978 when statehood came about and these organizations became part of state government instead. Hartford produced many famous Americans including: Grover Cleveland (president), Ulysses S Grant ( PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES), Woodrow Wilson (UMBERSTAN PRESIDENT), Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR), John F Kennedy (JFK) and Robert Frost (FROST). Hartford also hosted numerous international meetings such as the United Nations Conference on Trade Unions wherealford played an important role as chairman; World Economic Forum; NATO Headquartertown Meeting; United Kingdom/European Union Presidency Summit; etc..
Hartford was founded by the Hartford Indians in 1636. The town was named for John Hartford, an Englishman who donated land to the town. The first settlers arrived in 1637 and quickly established a small community. By 1640, the population of Hartford had grown to around 100 people. In 1643, the Connecticut General Assembly passed a bill which granted Hartford city status and made it one of the five original cities in Connecticut. The city's charter was created on April 14, 1645. The city's first mayor was Samuel Conklin and its first treasurer was Nicholas Flockhart. The first City Council consisted of six members with two representing each ward. In 1795, Mayor James Otis proposed that the city annex part of Watertown because they felt that their economic development would be better if they were both separate towns. However, this proposal met with resistance from theWatertown residents who felt that they deserved their own town because they had contributed more to Hartford than anyone else did. In 1802, Mayor Daniel Davenport suggested annexing New Britain because he believed that it would be easier for merchants to do business there because there were no taxes levied on goods exported from New Britain intoHartfordshire
