It is the third-largest city in the state of Connecticut after Stamford and Bridgeport. The metropolitan area has a population of over 200,000 people. Hartford straddles both sides of the Connecticut River and includes parts of Westchester and Fairfield counties. The region that now included Hartford was first settled by Native Americans in what is now central New England around 1250 AD. In 1664, English colonists founded Hartford on the south bank of the river as part of an ultimately successful attempt to establish a new colony in North America. At first, Hartford was occupied by farmers who grew corn and beans; timber extraction began soon afterward. On July 4, 1781, during the American Revolution, rebel forces burned down much of downtown with only a small section remaining standing until 1951 when it was replaced by modern day City Hall. During most of its history as an agricultural center it had no major industry until largescale manufacturing emerged during World War II with textile mills such as General Electric (now GE) and Chrysler Corporation developing there for war production materials like airplanes and tanks alike. However since then many heavy industry jobs have been lost to migration or other economic changes within Connecticut which has led to a decline in industrial production statewide from 2006-2010 %. In recent years there have been efforts to revive some heavy industrial factories along with some new development including homebuilders such as Toll Brothers whose headquarters are located just east of downtown next to Bradley International Airport which has seen growth thanks to ObamaCare Plaza developments %. Hartford is a city in Connecticut, United States. The population was 255,838 at the 2010 census. Hartford is the third-largest city in Connecticut and the largest city in the Hartford–West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also one of the leading economic centres in central Connecticut and has been called "the heartland of America". The first Europeans to visit what is now Hartford were French traders on their way from Quebec City to New York City in 1624. The town was founded by Colonel John Winthrop on July 12, 1634 as part of a land grant from King Philip II of Spain. In 1716, when England acquired directorial control over New Netherland, it merged with what is now Hartford County into the new Province of Connecticut under royal charter. On January 1, 1907, as part of an effort to make downtown more vibrant and attract businesses away from its older neighbourhoods east and west of Market Street, Mayor James Gephardt ordered that all but two blocks north of State Street be demolished for a new financial district which would include apartment buildings and other office buildings. The old commercial districts were razed between 1918 and 1924; most of what remains today date back to this redevelopment project. In 1894–1895, local historians published a series of books known as "History or bust: A seriesof sketches by local men illustrativeof our progress since adolescence." This series documented various aspects of life in rural towns across the United States during that period including education (particularly women's rights), industrialization (with accompanying social changes), religious conversions (especially among Protestants), natural disasters (e.g., forest fires), politics (including prohibitionism), housing development/renovation/privatization etc... According to historian Gertrude Himmelfarb there was no single event or figure who shaped modern Hartford more than Jonathan Edwards did during his time as pastor at First Congregational Church from 1784 until his death in 1802. Edwards' impact can be seen not just through his preaching but also through his actions such as founding Yale University and building several churches throughout northwest Connecticut while he was pastor there including one near present-day Westport which still stands today
