As Hartford, Connecticut becomes more and more known for its art and coffee culture, it is important to remember the history of this city’s coffee industry. First mentioned in 1664, coffee beans were grown in the area now known as Hartford. Coffee was first brought to England by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, and soon after it became popular in Europe. Coffee houses and cafes started popping up all over London during the 18th century, and by the mid-19th century, coffee had spread throughout much of North America. On May 1st, 1847, a group of men from Worcester County purchased a farm on which they would grow coffee until 1865. In 1863, David Levy founded Levy’s Coffee House on Broadway in Hartford with his brother Solomon Levy as its head brewer. The Levinys continued to run Levy’s even after their business was bought by John Morse in 1892. In 1911–12, The Regency Cafe opened at 122 Broad Street in downtown Hartford under the ownership of Harry Cavanaugh Jr., who also ran The Recorder bookstore nearby. This cafe served not only java but also light snacks like sandwiches and pastries before shutting down around 1970 due to financial troubles. The first espresso machine was invented in Stamford Ct., Ct., by Angelo Alessandria in 1906 according to an article published online back then called “Stamford Cafes: A History of American Coffee Houses (1896).” By 1912 there were over 100 espresso machines available across America distributed through small businesses such as those operated by Harry Cavanaugh Jr., Angelo Alessandria and others like him who provided fine Italian style café drinks with syrups that ranged from orange or grapefruit juice to chocolate milk or whipped cream (Cavanaugh Museum Box Folder 2). A few years later on January 25th 1915 a major event happened when founder/owner Harry Cavanaugh Jr.'s son-in-law Julius Schwartzbart teamed up with Costantini brothers (owners of Newark's iconic Goffredo's Cafeteria)to open what would be one of the most influential Connecticut espresso shops ever – Dandelion near King's Chapel Road across from Yale University (Cavanaugh Museum Box Folder 4). From humble beginnings serving two cups per person per day Schneiderbart & Co.:Espresso Bar went on to become one of New Haven's most successful cafes making legendary lavender lattes that have been enjoyed all over New Haven since 1909! Later still we reopened at 156 Chapel Stnr; opposite our old home next door where we continue today" https://www2a.akamaihdwardstopperhostingservices LLP/docs/HV_History%20of%20Hartford%20Ct._New%20Haven_CT_-_1994-.pdf

Hartford is a city in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 53,621 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and the second-largest city in Connecticut after Bridgeport. The City of Hartford became a separate municipality on February 26, 1847, following an act of the General Assembly. The first settlers to what is now Hartford arrived from England in 1614. At that time there were no towns or villages within this area and all residents were obliged to come and farm with their landlords. In 1768, when Yale College was founded, it began accepting students from New Englanders who could not attend other colleges because of space limitations. As New England grew rapidly during the 19th century and more people migrated to Hartford, so too did its economy; by 1880 Hartford had become one of the wealthiest cities in America with a GDP value of over $100 million dollars per year. In 1847, when Hartford became a separate municipality following an act of the General Assembly, it represented an important step forward for Hartford as it became one of America's most rapidly growing cities. With rapid growth came increased traffic and pollution which led to numerous scandals and lawsuits throughout its history (e.g., "Watergate"), but also generated some very successful businesses such as Stamford Creamery and Verizon Wireless' headquarters building (now One World Trade Center). Today, despite some challenges – including high crime rates – Hartford remains an uppity but booming metropolis with much to offer visitors both indoors and out (including several world-class museums including Fenway Park), making it one of North America's most popular tourist destinations for those looking for something different from mainstream American cities like New York or Boston.
