By 1830, Philips had developed their own espresso machines which they called “Grande Esemplare”. These machines featured four chambers which could each hold up to 20 ounces of coffee. They also used an internal heating coil to produce heat which resulted in better extraction rates than those achieved by earlier machines. Derby, Connecticut is a small town in eastern Connecticut that was founded in 1764. It is located on the border of Derby and Woodstock townships and is part of the Stamford-New London metropolitan area. The population was 7,574 at the 2010 census. Derby was named for Richard Derby, an Englishman who settled there in 1686. The first residents of Derby were farmers who grew corn and beans. They built their first homes around 1805. By 1840, the town had 5 miles (8 km) of road and 110 houses. In 1847, a canal was built through Derby to bring water from Lake Winnipesaukee to New London. The town's future growth depended on its position on Route 9, which led east to Hartford and west to New York City; it also developed as a manufacturing center with manufacture of shoes, carriages, hats, bricks and other materials for building construction. In 1862, General Ulysses S Grant visited Derby while he was campaigning in Connecticut; he considered it his headquarters during his visit. In 1865–1866 Congress passed the Second National Banks Act which created six national banks in America; these banks were used by local bankers to create loans for businesses and promote trade throughout the country. At this time, the population of Derby had increased to 2,000 people; by 1870 it had reached 4,500 people and by 1890 it had reached 10,000 people total.During World War I (1914–18), many residents served in military units including the 6th Regiment Connaught Rangers which fought at Ypres until December 1915 The First Congregational Church opened its doors in 1898 after being organized by Reverend George Hargrave On July 1st 1916 two planes crashed into opposite ends of Manchester Township killing all 29 passengers on board one plane while all but two passengers on another plane survived After years of reconstruction work started by Mayor John A O’Leary some progress has been made with new housing developments such as Park View just south off US 9 near Manchester High School The state fire marshal arrived soon afterwards begin investigating why no one knew about this problem beforehand
