Derby, Connecticut is home to one of the oldest and most successful small batch coffee companies in the United States. The coffee industry was founded in Derby by two entrepreneurs, John D’Angelo and George Perkins. D’Angelo and Perkins started their business selling beans from a small roastery near Derby. The first coffee was roasted in 1912 and it was called “The Green Mountain Coffee Company”. In 1916, they opened a second location in Waterbury, Connecticut. They soon realized that they could not do it all alone and decided to team up with another entrepreneur, Harry Smith. Together, they founded the Smith & Nephew Coffee Company. The company became very successful and continued to grow until its sale to Peet's Coffee Company in 1979. Through their success, the founders of Derby were able to learn a lot about coffee production and marketing. They learned how to sell their beans nationwide and also how to create a good product that would meet consumer needs. They also developed methods for storing coffee so that it would last for weeks or even months without rotting. This gave them the opportunity to experiment with different brewing methods and also develop new flavor profiles for their products. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Derby has a total area of 16 square miles (40 km²). The first European settlers in Derby were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1660. They soon abandoned their farms and moved into what is now Derby Township, which they named for Sir John Derham, an English gentleman who had helped them find their way eastward during the1630s voyage from England to North America. A meeting house was built by religious colonists in 1701 as a place where they could worship God and receive instruction from local ministers. In 1807, Derby became part of Connecticut when it was added to that state along with Bridgeport and Stamford. The population reached 10,000 by 1870; however, it gradually decreased until reaching its current size of 7,814 in 2010. One significant event that occurred during Dick Cheney's time as Vice President was his attendance at a rally organized by Congressman Donald Payne Sr., father of future United States Senator Donald Payne Jr.. Derby, Connecticut was founded in 1765 by the towns of Derby and Norwich. The town was named after a battle between the English and Native Americans which took place near present-day Derby. The town was first settled by Protestants who were fleeing religious persecution in Great Britain. In 1812, Derby became part of the United States of America and it remained one of its most republican towns until the late 19th century when it began to shift towards an evangelical Protestant lifestyle. The population of Derby peaked at around 30,000 in 1920 but has since declined to about 12,000 today. The history of derby begins with its founding as a small village on the banks of the Crane River. It quickly grew thanks to its location on land that had been granted to it by King George III for his loyal army officers and their families during the American Revolution. These soldiers were known as “the old men” because they had spent many years fighting for independence from British rule. By 1800, there were over 100 residents in derby and it boasted a full complement of churches, schools, taverns and other businesses. The original settlers were largely Irish Catholics who came overland from Ireland in search of a better life than they had back home. However, within five years of their arrival, these new arrivals had started to replace the Irishmen who had originally settled hereabouts. Most notably, John Butler built what is now known as Butler’s Mill which functioned as one of the main engines used by farmers throughout New England during this period. During this time frame also saw important changes take place within Derby itself: firstly, Methodism arrived here from Scotland via Connecticut; secondly (and more importantly), a school was opened for girls – Derby Female Academy – which helped create some social stability within what would eventually become an overwhelmingly Protestant community; finally (and most controversially), slavery became legal in America following emancipation in 1857). In all honesty though these three developments – Methodism*, girl education* & slavery* – are really only vaguely related historically speaking*. Nevertheless they do provide an interesting perspective on how different things changed over time within this small town situated atop a hillock surrounded by rolling countryside.* As we can see however, whileDerby may have made some impressive strides forward socially& economically*, its economic stability gradually eroded over time…
