The National Guard in Derby, Connecticut began its history in 1892 as a volunteer militia. The first national guard unit was organized on October 16th of that year and was known as the Derby Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in the First World War and during the Second World War. After the war, the National Guard unit in Derby continued to be called the Derby Volunteer Infantry Regiment until 1957 when it was redesignated as the 1st Battalion (Derby) of The Connecticut National Guard. In 1977, the battalion became part of The Connecticut Army National Guard and from then on it operates as a full battalion. The 1st Battalion (Derby) is made up of Troopers from all over central Connecticut who come together to serve their state and country. They are always looking for ways to support their local community by providing service at both military events and other community-based functions. In 1792, Derby was chartered as a town by the Connecticut General Assembly and became an integral part of that state. The National Guard played a significant role during World War I and II, helping to protect communities across the United States.
Derby, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 30,566 at the 2010 census. Derby is home to the Yale University Bulldogs football team and the Derby Downs racetrack. The first settlers in Derby were farmers who grew corn and beans on their farmsteads east of the river. By 1800, they had erected a gristmill on the Housatonic River below present-day Derby Downs. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1802 but replaced by one on the same site in 1810. In 1830, Alfred Smith began farming part of what would become Derby Township and built a large frame house here that still stands today. In 1836, John Gamble founded the paper business which became known as Gamble Paper Company. He moved his company headquarters from Hartford to Derby in 1848 after acquiring an interest in an Irish paper mill there called Cashmere Mill. From this point forward until 1870, when it merged with another paper company named Goshen & Townsend Paper Company to form G&T Paper Company (later GTP), Derby's only paper concern other than Gamble Paper Company itself! GTP produced newsprint for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Life before becoming one of America's leading commercial presses during World War I with its new plant at 100 Clinton Street (now Sayre Avenue). After hostilities ended, GTP resumed production of books until its closure in 1966 due to competition from overseas plants; however local production continued until 1984 when all physical printing ceased except for computer-generated images used by Derbyshire Newspapers Ltd., which continues operation today (see also "Derby Newspaper Service" below). On November 21st 1978 derbyshire Newspapers Ltd., successor to GTP Newspapers Ltd., went into receivership after attempts by two co-operative groups led by David Pearcey to buy it failed; however this did not affect continuing operations within Derbyshire Newspapers Ltd.. Today it is still possible to purchase tickets online for some events currently taking place at our old building including cricket matches against Oxford or Cambridge university teams...
