Derby, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 25,762 at the 2010 census. Derby's history goes back to 1636 when it was part of the Colony of New Haven. In 1784 Derby became a town and in 1881 it amalgamated with Hartford. Derby is located on the edge of the city of Hartford, east of Interstate 81 and north of Interstate 95. It is bordered by West Hartford to the south and west, Bridgeport to the north, and Waterbury to the east. The first settlers in Derby were farmers who came from England in 1636. They built log cabins near what is now Main Street. The first post office opened in 1784 and was called Northampton because it lay near Northampton Abbey where English bishops could conduct services for their parishioners. In 1814, Derby voters passed a resolution asking that the town be made into a borough so that its affairs would be under one control. On July 26, 1821, Derby became an incorporated village while still being governed by its own board of selectmen unconnected with that of neighboring townships such as South Windsor or East Hampton; this change represented an important step forward for municipalities throughout America during this period). In 1830-31 two explosions occurred around Derby which destroyed many buildings and injured several people; these events are generally considered to have been caused by Black powder munitions used by Union troops during their occupation of Connecticut following its Revolution; however there has never been any convincing proof demonstrating how either explosion originated from military purposes only or even if they did at all! In 1840-41 John Crouch developed corn bringing about increased trade between Derby and Norwich; soon afterwards he erected a cotton gin on land leased from Samuel Morse along both banks of river meeting northwest corner Main Street at present day Meeting House Road (now State Street). This venture led to further development within Derby including brickmaking which began producing bricks commercially for Building & Loan National Bank & Trust Company beginning September 1st1846 The first store building constructed in downtown derby was built on High Street opposite current day Elmira Regional Library across from Isabella’s restaurantFebruary 12th 1861 . A new flour mill commenced operations June 3rd 1865 just northwest corner First Avenue/Main Street now known as Westfield Shopping Center but closed down due to lack Of customers August 15th 1870 After years struggle New Holland Flour Mill finally moved into new location adjacent First Avenue on March 5th 1899 In 1907-08 construction began on New Haven Railroad Depot located adjacent to present day First Ave/Main street also becoming home To United States Post Office October 2nd 1908 - November 30th 1958
