The first coffee roasters in Derby came from different parts of Europe, but they all started out by roasted goods brought over by sailors or passengers on their ships. In 1829, a group of farmers bought a farm near Derby and began growing coffee beans. The first crop yielded about one ton of coffee each year, but due to high cost of inputs ( fertilizer, water, etc.), the price of coffee gradually decreased over time. By 1850, only a few smallholders remained in this region that produced very little coffee because it was too expensive to maintain an active roasting and shipping business. As trade shifted from local to global markets during this time period, however, more people became interested in purchasing fresh roasted beans from these smallholders. In 1853-4 two large plantations were purchased by Jno Pemberton for $360 per acre; these plantations provided enough beans for about 10 thousand commercial buyers worldwide at their peak production! This increased demand forced smaller roasters throughout America to begin producing their own coffees as well; Derby had some of the earliest "coffee bars" in America which served pre-packaged cups of fresh roasted bean with milk and sugar added (later supplemented with cream). These cafes played an important rolein promoting java culture throughout America during the late 19th century. By 1900 there were more than 1 hundred such cafes across North America! Derby's long history with coffee has been shaped by its location: close proximity to major transportation hubs (New York City and Boston) made it easy for merchants and travelers alike to purchase fresh roasted beans direct from larger roasters overseas or through trading posts along the coastlines of New England and Midwestern United States respectively. Additionally, derby's mild climate made it a popular place for farmers to plant crops - leading many nearby townsfolk into criminal enterprises involved in smuggling raw materials upstate rather than face punishment from law enforcement officials who could shut down their businesses entirely should they fall afoul of regulations set forth by New England statesmen during this time period
