Derby, Connecticut is a small town located in the central region of Connecticut. The population was 4,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-Hartford-New Haven metropolitan area and is bordered by East Hartford to the north, West Hartford to the east,delaware on its south side, and Bridgeport to the west. Derby's rich history can be found in its churches, schools and businesses. The first settlers in Derby were farmers who arrived in 1778 from Dover Township, New York. The township was named for Lieutenant Colonel George Washington's home county of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Captain John Haskell built a cabin on what is now Derby Common in 1781 during his military service with the Patriot forces during the American Revolution. In 1801 when Derby became a town it was named for Nathaniel Derby who had been appointed Justice of Peace for Hartford County by President James K. Polk in 1805. The first post office was established at Derby on October 19, 1811 under name "Wethersfield". On December 12th of that year it changed its name to "Derby". The first store opened on Main Street in 1815 and became one of America's largest commercial businesses until it closed its doors in 1957 due to competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.. The only remaining building from this era is an annex that serves as a officespace for Getzfeldt & Partners law firm which occupies three floors inside an old engine factory complex near downtown derby (now known as Riverfront Center). In 1870 when streetcars started running through town they brought people necessary supplies such as flour and butter which led to increased business activity along Main Street including a bakery which still exists today called The Gilded Age Bakery (later acquired by Hershey Foods). In 1907 when statehood was granted to Connecticut residents within the new country there were many changes taking place within Derby including annexation by Plainville so that Plainville could have access to all vital railroad connections while also maintaining control over voting boundaries; however this annexation did not stick because Plainville later voted against statehood five times before finally giving into pressure from Hartford City Council members who saw this as another way for Plainvilleto control their neighbor more effectively than they ever could through their own elected officials. When World War I began things took an drastically different turn withFactory owners shutting down all their plants across America due to munitions production quotas set by Congress but Derby Continued producing food products needed for soldiers overseas despite Congressional restrictions; however after Germany declared war on America mainstreet went nuts with patriotic fervor becoming almost exclusively blacksmith/bootblack shops catering primarily to American troops while other stores close completely or convert into liquor stores catering specifically towards GI's wartime needs although some continue operations unchanged until recently; overall this period can be characterized as one where most citizens turned inward focusing upon their own homes while government functions slowly deteriorated leading eventually to World War II bringing even greater social unrest which ultimately caused mass layoffs and loss of jobs throughout entire community characteristic traits typical during peacetime 1950s thru 1970s prior thereto
