The first recorded Coast Guard gift was given in Derby, Connecticut on December 12, 1892. Captain John Fenton of the United States Coast Guard presented a trunk of rifles and shotguns to Dr. George Wesson, treasurer of Derby town. The gift was in memory of Commodore Samuel Eliot Morison who died in 1890 while commanding the Cape May Light Boat Squadron. The first Coast Guard station in Derby was established on October 14, 1902 by Rear Admiral Edward Payson Herbert with assistance from Commodore John Cushing RN. The station consisted of a launch named “North Star” and two launches, “Lady Emma” and “Doris Ann” which were towed by tugboats to the mouth of the River Otter where they unloaded supplies for the navy. It is interesting to note that both Commodore Herbert and Rear Admiral Payson had served as Commandant at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard prior to their appointment in Derby. In 1956, Coast Guard Station Commander First Class Clifford Dickson donated three lifeboat tenders which became operational at Station #4 immediately upon donation. These boats were named after members of the coast guard family who had passed away during 1957-1958 - Mrs Alice Janssen (Mrs Gertrude Atherton), Capt Gordon Henschel (Capt Harold Cushing) and Lt Willis Swayne (Lt Rufus Howe). Since then numerous more gifts have been received from individuals or organizations wishing to recognize our coast guard brothers and sisters!

In 1979, the Coast Guard reached its current size with the creation of 11 Sector Offices. Each Sector Office is responsible for a particular part of the Coast Guard’s mission: safeguarding America’s maritime borders and airspace; providing coastal search and rescue; conducting law enforcement activity; and providing support to Homeland Security functions.
