The United States Navy has a rich history of deploying gifts to friends and allies in the Global South. This tradition began with Admiral Chester Nimitz’s “Gift of the Seas” Expedition in 1946, which sent USS Constitution (LPD-19) on a goodwill visit to Haiti. The next year, Vice Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison organized the “Gift of the Seas” Expedition to Dominican Republic. Gifts from this expedition are still remembered today. In 1969, Commodore John F Kennedy gave USS Coral Sea (CVA-3) to Thailand as a gift for their military assistance during the Vietnam War. Japan also sent gifts to various countries during this time period: In 1961, USS Iwo Jima (LHD-6) was donated to Japan by Rear Admiral Louis J. Halsey; and in 1978, HMS Resolution (R 745) was donated to Spain by then Vice Admiral Harry S Truman. Today, Navy deployments continue at a high level with Operation Neptune Spear and Operation Warriorfish both taking place in Afghanistan and Yemen respectively. These deployments have brought new life into these traditions and have helped keep our friends closer than ever before. Danbury is a town in Connecticut, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,569. The name "Danbury" is derived from early English settlers who called it Danbury Plantation. It has been reported that for many years it was one of the most diverse towns in Connecticut with people from all over the world living and working together. Today, Danbury still has a strong international flavor with many of its residents having dual citizenship or nationalities.
The United States Navy has been deploying gift-laden warships for centuries, and the tradition continues today. In 1916, the USS Constitution was delivered to the navy by President Woodrow Wilson as a symbol of American solidarity with Great Britain during World War I. The USS Constitution's 633-pound cannon was eventually fitted with a 25-foot long cable that terminated in a small boat on the ocean floor, allowing it to launch torpedoes and shells into naval engagements. In 1945, when Japan surrendered following World War II, many of its ships were captured or destroyed. Among these vessels was the USS Missouri (BB 71), which had been docked at Yokosuka Naval Base since 1941. After being decommissioned in 1946 and stored for years in an unused hangar at Yokosuka Naval Base, BB 71 finally saw service as part of Operation Market Garden in 1968. When North Korea invaded South Korea that year, Missouri fired two rounds from her 5-inch gun at Kim Il Sung's invading army while lying off Pusan Island. This act became folklore among North Koreans because no U.S.-made ship had ever fired combat shots during war up until then. On September 11th of that year, Missouri served as flagship for Operation Neptune's Spearhead—the largest amphibious assault operation in history—when she participated in assaults on Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base and Wonsan Army Garrison Airport. As part of this campaign, she sank three Korean torpedo boats before withdrawing back to Yokosuka Naval Base after completing her mission objectives. On December 8th of that year, only days after America's first successful nuclear weapons tests at Bikini Atoll--which violated Japanese neutrality regulations--BB 71 engaged two Japanese Eleron class submarines near Jinsen Island off the coast of South Korea during Operation Shotoku Maru.[1] She successfully shot down both submarines before withdrawsing back to Yokosuka Naval Base safely with her crew safe and sound[2]. Since then, BB 71 has seen numerous deployments including support operations during peacetime and wartime missions throughout Asia Pacific; various exercises including Rimet Cup/Vigilant Shield; participation in joint exercises such as SHARPEX/John F Kennedy Games; deployments celebrating America's birthday such as Sail Out week; ceremonies commemorating fallen sailors such as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day; Bastille Day events attended by France’s President François Hollande; Diamond Jubilee celebrations hosted by Queen Elizabeth II... To date she has undergone more than 350 inspections and repairs totaling over $100 million worth of work[3]. Her sterling reputation remains unbroken even though some parts have begun to show wear due to factors such as salt water corrosion[4], moisture damage caused by rainstorms[5], etc.. [1][2][3][4][5]
Navy deployed gift history dating back to World War II. Gifts given out during that time period included items such as radios, torpedoes, and Spitfires.
Danbury is a town in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The population was 41,803 at the 2000 census, making it the 11th most populous town in Connecticut and the third most populous in Danbury metropolitan area. It is also one of the wealthiest towns in Connecticut with an income per capita of $61,362. The first permanent settler in what is now Danbury was Nicholas Putnam who arrived on November 15, 1664. He named his community after himself and his wife Mary Putnam, daughter of Major John Putnam of Stratford-on-Avon, England. By 1700 there were over 25 families living here including Nicholas' son Nathaniel who had married Anne Hathaway (dd/mm/yy). Nathaniel's grandson John Hathaway founded Danbury Academy in 1751 which became Oneonta College in 1884 and eventually closed due to financial difficulties in 1938. In 1797 when Colonel James Dunne bought 640 acres (258 hectares) along the North Branch Susquehanna River he named it "Putnam's Valley". The valley has been known as "Putnam's Valley" ever since despite there being no contemporary documentation that suggests such a name
Danbury, Connecticut is a town in western Connecticut. The population was 33,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the state after Hartford. Danbury has a rich history dating back to its early days as a small farming community. The first permanent settler in what would become Danbury was Nicholas Vail, who arrived in 1764 and built the first home in what would become Danbury. In 1812, John Fenton purchased land east of present day Main Street from Nicholas Vail and began developing it into a town. The name "Danbury" originated with Fenton's belief that the place had been called "Daneborough" by German settlers during the Revolutionary War.
