The Danbury National Guard was organized in 1892. The first unit was the 12th Regiment of Militia, which was founded in 1892. The first officer to be commissioned as a captain in the National Guard was George W. Brownell, who served from 1912-1916. In 1916, the 1st Connecticut Infantry Regiment became part of the National Guard and it changed its name to the Connecticut Guardsmen in 1927. In 1934, the Connecticut Guardsmen became an independent regiment and changed their name again to Danbury Armory Guards (DAGs). In 1958, the DAGs were consolidated with other state guard units into a single regiment under the command of Major General William Fenton known as TheDanbury State Guard (TGS). In 1990, TGS became a permanently stationed national guard unit at Fort Trumbull. Today, The Danbury State Guard is headquartered at Camp Starke and has over 100 soldiers including 9 officers and 30 civilians employed by its Commanding Officer/Chief Warrant Officer Programmes Directorate located throughout Southern Connecticut.

The guard's history stretches back to 1917 when the Connecticut National Guard was activated as part of the America First Committee, which aimed to promote American independence. The Danbury Chapter of The American Legion was also founded in 1917 and has been present in town since then.
Danbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Danbury were water priests from Bohemia who lived near Hingham and Norwalk on the Mystic River. In 1634, John Davenport sold his interest in land at present-day Danbury for $2 per acre to Samuel Fuller. The town was founded by General Israel Putnam on July 24, 1795 as Putnam's Station. The towns name comes from "danburyshire" which means "the place where rushes grow." There are several theories as to why the name was chosen—one being that it resembled ashire (a type of barley). Another theory suggests that because danburyshire is so close to Hartford and West Hartford, it was suggested as an alternate spelling for both places before they were actually named afterDanbury Township and Danbury Hills respectively. In 1881, Norwich became the second town in Connecticut to be incorporated when it became available through special legislation passed by the state legislature following a vote of residents of Norwich over whether or not to secede from Danbury Township. The current downtown district was built around 1909–1910 when developers built two blocks along Main Street between State and Washington Streets; this block still exists today with its original architecture and retail business districts inside buildings such as The Friendly Tavern and The Grange Restaurant dating back to that time period. Other significant buildings during those years include First Congregational Church (built 1886), Stroudsburg Building (1890), Masonic Temple (1893), Post Office Administration Building (1907), Wigglesworth Drug Store (1909) and Lakewood Baptist Church which serves as headquarters for the local branch of Habitat for Humanity since 1978. When these structures were destroyed by fire in 1974 they were replaced with new structures designed by architect Philip Johnson which include an art deco style church building known as the Community House located at 11 Elm Street which served as headquarters until 1996 when it burned down again causing extensive damage done to both building and property; this structure has been rebuilt multiple times Since then including most recently in 2006 using funds provided by eBay founder Bob Parsons who placed a bid on behalf of Stamford-based architecture firm Wright + Knight Architecture LLP resulting in the firm’s reconstruction of both buildings which opened last Fall amidst much fanfare including local media coverage Danbury also has another large commercial center located off Interstate 95 called Northwoods Mall which anchors I-95 northbound just south of Exit 6A off I-395 about east of Fairfield Avenue; Northwoods Mall includes anchor stores such as Sears, JCPenney, Macy's etc.; this mall includes 4 restaurants namely KFC/Carlson's Jr., Dunkin' Donuts/, Subway/Pizza Hut/, Wendy's/. Northwoods Mall also contains a large movie theater with 3 screens showing independent films plus 1 screen showing major Hollywood releases
