In 1814, Congress passed an act recognizing that Connecticut had been lost to New York in the Revolutionary War and ordered all British records in Connecticut be destroyed including those of the towns of Danbury and Newtown (now Watertown). So much documentation was destroyed that it took many years for any real understanding of what had happened during that time period to come about; however some evidence has been found as late as 1915 which makes it possible to study this period more closely than if no such legislation had ever been passed. The first post office was established at Danbury on February 2, 1814 with Samuel Morse as its first keeper. In 1827, John Fitch opened a store here which soon became one of the most important operations within town limits. On July 14th of that year (1827), Hiram Swayne founded Swayne's Academy - one of America’s oldest grammar schools - giving rise to what is now known as Swayne Street/Washington Boulevard south of Main Street/Watertown Road eastward into Orangeville (then East Windsor) District No 7 between Watertown Road and Route 9A-9B northward into Orangeville District No 8 just beyond Route 9A-9B was also named after him – thus Settlers began naming streets after themselves or their ancestors while still living in their original homes settlements! In 1840–41 local resident John Loughran donated land adjacent to his home on State Street for a public square named after him – Loughran Square today – making Danbury one of only two American municipalities honored with a square name recognition program following Confederation!
