Danbury is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,702 at the 2010 census. Danbury is the second-largest city in Connecticut after Hartford. It is the largest city on the border of Andover and Middletown townships. The first settlers in what would become Danbury were three men from England who arrived in 1636 as part of a group led by Anthony Ashley Cooper. They named their new settlement for John Danforth, 1st BaronAshley, an English gentleman who had helped found Plymouth Colony and had been involved in many important negotiations with France and Spain before his death in 1660. The town became part of Fairfield County on February 3, 1815. In 1824, President James K. Polk founded the National Republican Convention here which nominated General Zachary Taylor for president that year. In 1828–30, Danbury was home to one of the most famous trials in U.S history when Aaron Burr was tried for treason under New York State law for conspiring with Mexico to overthrow American independence (and later pardoned). There have also been significant changes to Danbury since its founding such as becoming center stage for regional biotech industry; being host to both Yale University's School of Medicine and Brown University's School of Veterinary Medicine; and hosting major events like the America’s Cup yacht race every two years since 1981 (the race moved from Long Island to Atlantic City following Hurricane Sandy).
