From its humble beginnings as a small town coffee shop in the early 1800s, Danbury’s Gourmet Coffee has been a major player in the coffee industry for over 150 years. Today, Gourmet Coffee continues to serve up delicious cup of Joe to customers all across Connecticut and beyond. In honor of our Anniversary, we wanted to take a moment to explore some of the roots and history of Gourmet Coffee. In 1812, John Morse opened The Grog Shop in Danbury, which was at the time one of the most popular coffeehouses in New England. In addition to his famous grog (a strong black drink made from molasses and water), Morse also sold newspapers and other reading materials from his shop. His customers were often professionals or politicians who needed caffeine between meetings. Morse’s successors, including his son-in-law and business partner Joshua Barney (who later founded Barney & Co.), continued The Grog Shop’s tradition of serving quality coffee while providing congenial customer service. As businesses grew larger and demand for their services grew more complex, The Grog Shop became known as one of the first commercial espresso bars in America. In 1914, when Prohibition began affecting America, many small businesses closed their doors due to financial hardship. However, Joshua Barney refused to close his beloved store despite this difficult reality – he knew that prohibition would only make him harder hit financially if it did not produce any revenue for him or his business partners. With assistance from friends and family members – including John Morse himself – they managed to stay open until 1933 when prohibition was repealed nationwide. During Prohibition era there was no legal way for citizens in America to purchase coffee beans or cups; instead people had to purchase alcohol which caused much difficulty for cafes that served refreshment during prohibition days. This led many java enthusiasts around the country start producing their own beans/coffee under assumed names like “The Flying Dutchman” or “Captain Morgan USA” in order get around these laws without breaking them (and risking criminal prosecution). An important part of post-prohibition Danburyhistory is that during this time period several independent coffee roasters emerged such as Starbucks (*note: Starbucks began operations less than two miles away from where The GrogShop operated) and Peet's * note: For nearly 50 years Peet's stored its beans on site within walking distance of their flagship store on State Street*. It wasn't until 2004 when Peet's moved its beans production out into an automated bean bazaar*note: Which allowed them unprecedented access to global market conditions*) that they finally ceased production entirely outside North America *. After decades spent striving towards innovation*, Peet's finally closed down their Coffeeshop Annex building at 9 Front St.,Danbury CT on December 2nd 2009 after manufacturing over 4 million pounds†of premium quality Kopi Luwak tea.*Note: In commemoration of their long legacy as a leading retailer throughout Connecticut we are offering a special 5 gallon mug with every purchase starting January 1st 2010!

It grew rapidly in population and commerce, becoming an important center for learning and culture during the 18th century. In 1814, Danbury became the first town in Connecticut to be incorporated as a village. The city's growth led to many renovation projects throughout its history, including construction of New Britain's only underground water main in 1873, new public library facilities in 1928, and renovations to its central business district in 1978. It is part of the Hartford-Worchester-Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. Danbury has been settled since 1636 and its first settler, John Winthrop, built his house on the site of what is now the New England Aquarium. The town's current form emerged from a merger of two other towns in 1868: Groton and Danburyville. Danbury's incorporation as a town occurred on July 1, 1868. At its peak in 1930 it had a population of over 50,000 people; however this figure has declined markedly since then due to various factors such as suburbanization and loss of manufacturing jobs in neighboring municipalities. Today Danbury is home to several major commercial districts including downtown which became an center for arts and culture after being renovated in the early 21st century; Interstate 95 (I-95) which forms much of the town's border; and Fairfield Farmsrace Park which contains several large retail developments overlooking Long Island Sound.

This helped create what is now known as modern day espresso culture.
The origins of gourmet coffee are murky, but it is possible that a French roaster began importing high-quality beans to English consumers in the early 1800s. There is evidence that coffeehouses in London and other major cities were selling small amounts ofOrigin Coffee beans by 1825. The first commercially successful commercial coffee business was founded in Milan, Italy in 1847 by Giovanni Giolitti and Angelo Bormida. Italian espresso machines were first developed in the 1880s and these machines used small amount of origin coffee beans which gave the drink its characteristic bitter taste.

Danbury's history can be traced back to 1664 when it was founded as a small settlement on the south bank of the Thames River by General Nicholas-Jacques Carteret and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location near water supplies, manufacturing, and transportation hubs such as Hartford and New York City. In 1814, Danbury became part of what was then called New Britain County; this area would later become Fairfield County. In 1837, Danbury became an incorporated town under the name of Danbury Junction.Danbury has been through several cycles of economic growth and decline; during its peak years from 1972 to 1998, it had a GDP per capita of $50 million dollars (U.S.). However, recent years have seen significant changes take place within the community; in 2009–10, for example, there were negative job losses due tothe financial crisis that swept across America. This led to a resurgence in activity within Danbury as businesses regained their footing and new investment began flowing into the community again.
The city of Danbury was first settled in 1638. The town was named for the Dutch word "dan" meaning 'a stream'. By 1795, the population had reached 2,000 people and it became a borough in 1834. The first mayor of Danbury was John P. Hennessey. In 1889, the borough became an incorporated city and has since grown to over 100,000 residents. The most famous resident of Danbury is Mayor Richard M. Daley who served from 1983 to 2011.
