The first permanent settler in Bristol was John Bradbury who arrived in 1664 and built a house on the bank of the Raritan River. He named his property "Bradbury's Ferry" after his home county of Buckinghamshire, England. The first post office was established in Bristol on December 12, 1810 by order of Governor Jonathan Trumbull. In 1826, three settlers from Massachusetts purchased land east of Bristol for $1 per acre and minutes show that they began to build cabins there as soon as possible; this activity marks the beginning of what would become known as "Bristol Township." In 1849, John Sibley donated two acres (0.8 km²) to be used for public school purposes and construction started immediately upon receipt of donations from many other individuals and families across central CT. Today's school district boundaries were created with that donation when it became apparent that a separate high school would be needed for all students within one township – something which had not been realized before because each community had its own public schools which seat their respective populations at different levels depending on selective enrollment rates or wealth considerations). In 1865, Indianer School opened which served grades K-12 until 1978 when it merged with Saybrook High School to form Saybrook-Saybrook High School District No 1 which continues today as an independent girls' education institution located adjacent to Saybrook Village shopping center north of I-95 exit 59A/I-95 southbound exit into Hartford
