Bristol, Connecticut is a small town in western Connecticut. The population was 4,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Bristol" comes from Bristol, England which was once the capital of that country. Bristols early significance as a religious center may be connected with its location on Route 32 just east of New Haven and west of Hartford. The town began to develop as a commercial center during the early 20th century when transportation became available to it from New York City and other points north. By 1930 Bristol had become an important manufacturing center for munitions and other Industrial products exported to Europe and China. At that time it also had significant medical facilities including an operating hospital, two mental hospitals, a Veterinary Hospital, a Baptist Church and numerous movie theaters. In recent years some portions of Bristol have developed into residential areas while others have retained their downtown character including the Clocktower district which features several historically significant buildings dating back to 1790s
