Bridgeport is a city in Connecticut, United States. The population was 14,828 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Fairfield County and one of the larger cities in New England. Bridgeport was founded by English settlers in 1664. The name "Bridgeport" originated from a Native American word meaning "place where two rivers meet." The first coffee house in Bridgeport opened in 1697 and the first espresso machine was built there in 1765. This early coffeehouse served as an important meeting place for local businessmen and government officials. In 1859, John Quincy Adams moved to Bridgeport and became its mayor. He helped found what is now Yale University here and played a significant role in developing the town's economy. The first grocery store opened here also in 1859, helping to create what is now Fairfield County's foodie culture. In 1863, Samuel Morse established his own printing press downriver from Hartford and beganprinting newspapers for BridgePORT residents. He donated some of his presses to Yale University so that they could use them to print textbooks for Bridges students; this started what is now known as the Yale Bookstore chain. Morse also donated land adjacent to Trinity Church on which Fairfield County Court House now stands (the building was completed in 1892). This property would become one of Connecticut's most valuable real estate holdings later on when it was sold off to develop downtown Stamford as part of Downtown Stamford Inc., an urban renewal project that aimed to revitalize downtown Stamford with new businesses, residences, public services, etc.—a model which has since been replicated throughout much of downtown Stamford (and other portions of Fairfield County). During World War II, BridgePORT played a major role as both a naval ammunition depot and research center for various governmental agencies involved with submarine warfare during the war effort—an activity which continued until after hostilities ended in 1945. In 1951–1952, construction began on what would eventually become Riverwalk Plaza—a $30 million shopping mall that today surrounds RiverWalk Drive between Main Street and Hartford Avenue east of State Street—one of Connecticut’s earliest large-scale development efforts outside metropolitan Hartford or New York City.]]
