The Bridgeport-Hokies football team has been playing at the University of Connecticut since 1893. The team was founded as the Hartford Blues, and played their first game in 1903. In 1915, they changed their name to the Connecticut Wolverines. In 1922, they joined forces with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and became a charter member of the Eastern Division of the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines won their only national championship in 1950 (the program’s first). They also appeared in two bowl games during their time as a part of the Big Ten. The Tigers (1970-1974) and Gophers (1985-1988) were also members of that conference during that time period. In 1974, after sixteen years as a member of the American Football Conference, CTU joined what is now known as Southeastern Conference (SEC). Between 1978 and 1984, CTU played its home games at UConn Stadium on campus in Fairfield County. After leaving SEC for good following the 1984 season, CTU returned to play its home games at UConn Stadium through 2006 before moving back to Bridgeport for an eighth season starting in 2007. The stadium has served as host to both NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship matches and Southeastern Regional Collegiate Athletic Association Final Fours throughout its history; it has also been used by ConnACAA Wrestling Championships & Sectional Baseball Championships over the years too! It is one of only three stadiums in America still currently used by an NCAA Football Team (& one other school left!).
