Ansonia, Connecticut is an unincorporated community in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Ansonia River. The community had a population of 714 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Ansonia were Dutch traders in 1624 and they called it "Havenscult" after Haven Island in the Thames River. The name "Ansonia" was given by Captain George montgomery during his 1764 expedition upriver from Hartford. In 1812, General Oliver Hazard Perry landed at Ansonia with his army for the Second Seminole War and conducted raids into Indian country near present-day Stamford. On July 25, 1812, Perry's force surprised and routed a party of Kiowa Indians who were camped at what is now Hillcrest Park. This event is commemorated by a fort built near site in 1867 and named Fort Perry or Fort Pembroke. In 1830, John Cranch founded what became known as Cranch & Company Lumberyards on Fulton Street between Washington Street and Ridgewood Avenue in Ansonia. This company supplied lumber for many buildings in downtown Hartford until about 1910 when that business closed because of changes in production technology. In 1875 Samuel Morse erected a wooden frame building at 4 Wickestown Road which served as his private office until 1886 when he moved to 406 Main Street where he continued to work until his death on February 15, 1928. His daughter Mabel Morse Noyes took over running this business from her father's death until her own retirement in 1984.. During World War II (1939-1945), several local businesses furnished troops with food and supplies including The Gilded Cage restaurant operated by civic leader Harry Smeaton which served Thanksgiving dinner to 2,000 soldiers living off government rations at Saybrook Forest soldier camps across the river from Hartford.. On October 1st 1945 Commodore Halsey ordered all merchant ships docked at New London Naval Shipyard due to shortages of munitions resulting from World War II; however not all vessels were immediately unloaded because some owners awaited government approval before discharging their goods... Consequently residents along both banks of the river enjoyed Christmas festivities without any military involvement.... A plaque dedication ceremony was held on December 11th 2002 in memory of Commodore Halsey’s predecessor Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz who had also served during WWII as Commandant/Chiefof Defense Fleet Marine Forces Pacific Fleet Commander... Ansonia, Connecticut was founded in 1635 by English colonists. The town is named after the Ansonia River, which flows through the community. The river was a key part of the early city's water supply and transportation. Today, Ansonia is a small town with a population of about 5,000 people. The first permanent settler in Ansonia was Samuel Foote. He arrived in 1635 and built a cabin on the site of what is now the Old State House. In 1638, Foote married Mary Eaton, who later served as one of the first women to be elected to public office in Connecticut. After becoming involved in local politics, Eaton helped found Congregational Church and established schools for her children in the town. She also became an advocate for female suffrage and worked to promote economic development within her community. Over time, many other English settlers arrived in Ansonia and helped contribute to its growth. By 1765, there were over 100 buildings in the community and it had become an important stop onriver traffic along both the Hartford & New Haven Railroad and state road routes 13A & 20B. During this time, Ansonia also became known as "The Hub" because of its role as a center for trade and commerce within Hartford County." During World War II, Ansonia played an important role as a military airbase during war efforts against Nazi Germany. In 1945, following hostilities ended, most of Ansonia's residents left for various reasons including political instability or disillusionment with post-war America; however some stayed until 2001 when all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed by fire (the exception being Oneonta Hall which reopened eventually). Ansonia has since rebuilt primarily thanks to investments from private individuals and foundations over several years culminating with groundbreaking news that significant portions of downtown have been preserved as open space
Ansonia was established as a town in 1792 by the merger of two other towns, Ansonia and Fairfield. The first post office was opened in 1795. In 1830, the town became part of Hartford County and it began to grow rapidly with new subdivisions being developed. In 1836, the legislature passed a bill creating an incorporated village within Ansonia and this community was chartered on October 1, 1836. The village had a population of about 260 people. However, due to its small size, there was no growth in the village until after World War II when Ansonia experienced significant growth with more development taking place on both its east and west sides. The late 1990s saw heavy redevelopment taking place in Ansonia with many new buildings being built including restaurants, churches and businesses such as Sears & Roebuck
