Ansonia, Connecticut is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town dates back to 1635 when settlers arrived from England on the Ansonia Plantation and founded the small town of Ansonia on what is now Route 9 east of Hartford. In 1814, Ansonia became an incorporated village and in 1836 it became a town under state law. The first post office in Ansonia opened in 1827. By 1840, when most of the surrounding countryside had been annexed by the newtown limits of Hartford, Ansonia itself had become a city with its own charter and mayoralty. The main commercial center for Ansonia was its riverfront waterfront which developed into one of the largest commercial areas in central Connecticut during this time period. Many important businesses were located here including American Can Company (now known as PepsiCo), United States Rubber Company (now known as Raytheon) and Smith's Brewery (now known as Heineken). One notable resident during this time period was Cornelius Vanderbilt IV who owned approximately 1/3rd of all privately held land within town limits at the time he died in 1865. Growth stalled during World War II due to lack of military production nearby although some factories did move away after that war; however, growth resumed following repeal of Prohibition in 1948 and more high-tech businesses moved into downtown since then such as Intel Xeon Laboratories and Motorola Solutions Incorporated which are still headquartered there today among others.
