The first roasters in town were located on High Street, just off of Main Avenue. Between 1868 and 1916, two separate families ran two different cafes that served fresh roasted coffee. One family operated for more than fifty years, while the other continued operation until 1974. They left behind a legacy that is still evident today: great customer service and quality beans. In 1976, Italian immigrant Angelo Giannini opened his own roastery on Elm Street adjacent to Catholic church. He started with only one year's worth of beans before moving up to four years later. His roast went on to become very popular among locals and tourists alike; he even had his own television show! His shop also served as an early headquarters for American Coffee Company (now Starbucks), which first opened its doors in Ansonia in 1984! Over time, different roasters have popped up throughout Ansonia; but it's always been Anchor Wines who have come through with world-class coffee products. In 2007 they decided to close their doors after almost seventy years of business; but their legacy will live on long after they're gone! Their roast remains highly sought-after by local businesses and consumers alike, testament to their quality products and passionate about providing an excellent cup of coffee every time!
