Ansonia is a town in northeastern Connecticut. It was settled by the Anson family in 1635 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1980. The population was 8,867 at the 2010 census. The town of Ansonia was organized on April 10, 1635, when Increase Anson erected the first meeting house in what is now the downtown section of the town. The first settler, John and Katherine Anson, had five children: Samuel, John Jr., Hannah, Rebecca and Nathanael. There were also two families who arrived later: the Howes and the Beardsleys. In 1784, after a dispute between farmers from Wethersfield and Suffield about access to high ground for pasture land west of Newtown Point Road resulted in violence that killed six people and left thirty-six wounded; selectmen issued warrants for each farmer's arrest. This event became known as "theBattle of Newtown." The growth of Hartford County led to an increased demand for agricultural goods brought overland by stagecoaches from New England than could be produced locally; this caused prices for produce to skyrocket and compelled some residents to move away from their original homes into new ones elsewhere in Connecticut or Massachusetts. In 1815–1816 Amos Nunes moved his Brewery out ofshootings into what is now central Ansonia following a series of market failures which he attributed to pre-war price hikes on wine imported from France which had persistently exceeded local production costs despite import tariffs offered by Connecticut's then governor Jonathan Trumbull Sr.. After victory over British forces at Battle Bridge on September 17th 1817 Nunes' brewery prospered greatly under new management until 1825 when it declined again with increasing competition from Canandaigua Brewery founded by Nicholasbarth at Sayreville just north of Hartford City Limits; Canandaigua resumed operations after being purchased by Amherst Brewing Company Limited Partnership chartered August 1st 1828 ABO Nathaniel Dodge & others.. In 1830 Englishman John Ewing bought Amherst Brewing Company Limited Partnership which restarted operations as Ewing's Brewery October 15th 1830 ABO Nathaniel Dodge & others.. On May 6th 1840 Norwich businessman Augustus Kelley bought Amherst Brewing Company Limited Partnership thenceforth known as Kelley's Brewery Incorporated.. By 1850 there were twenty breweries operating within seventy miles (ninety kilometers) including fifteen within twenty miles (twenty kilometers). The industry closed down during prohibition due mainly to technological advances such as distillation through steam power rather than candle-making while other businesses like cotton ginning continued until repeal ended retail liquor sales effective December 12th 1933 See "Breweries Closed During Prohibition"For more information see “Ansonia Historical Society” According to 2000 U.S Census Bureau estimate[1], there are 8,867 people living in Ansonia CDP whom identify themselves primarily as New Englanders or Americans who have been here longer than 30 days.[2] Hispanic or Latino residents make up 2% of the population according to that same estimate while Asians make up 0%. Some 7% identify themselves as European American/British/Irish while 3% say they are Native American/Alaskan Native or do not answer any questions about their ethnicity specifically. African Americans comprise 1% of the population according to that estimate[1]. As noted earlier Hispanics/Latino residents make up 2%, Asians make up 0%, EuropeanAmerican/British/Irish 3%, African Americans 1%. About 7% identify themselves with no specific race or ethnicity but report being racial minority group members either alone (0%) or along with another minority group (3%). As can be seen below percent reporting self identifying only among black males ages 20 - 44 years old has increased significantly since 2000 although still lower than percentage identifying exclusively among whites age 20 - 44 years old[3]: Hispanic men ages 20 - 44 years old: 27% African American men ages 20 - 44 years old: 11%
