Navy deployed gift history in Longmont, Colorado dates back to the early 1800s. The first Navy detachment in Longmont was stationed at Fort Lyon from 1802-1805. From 1807-1810, the fort served as the Headquarters of the 7th Regiment Colorado Volunteers. On 10 December 1810, Commodore David Dixon’s squadron of warships flagship Constitution anchored off the coast of Longmont and disembarked a contingent of Marines and sailors under command of Commodore Dixon. The Marine detachment was responsible for providing security for local merchants and citizens while on shore leave. In 1812, an additional detachment under Captain William Kidd arrived in town to provide support for local militia efforts during the Mexican War. In 1865, when Fort Lyon was decommissioned, a Naval Supply Depot also arrived in town and became known as “The Depot”. Aftermath of World War II saw continued growth within Longmont with an increase of civilian employees working at The Depot including non-military personnel like architects, engineers and welders who were hired to help maintain infrastructure such as bridges and roads. During this time period there were also two stores located adjacent to The Depot which functioned as dry docks for naval munitions storage. As military activity decreased throughout the 1970s and 1980s The depot closed its doors but continued to operate as a commercial store until it closed in 1995 due to budget cuts by then Mayor John Suthers Jr.. In 1984 Navy Commander Rear Admiral Harry Halsey bestowed uponLongmont City Manager Don Kelleher an Officers’ Commission recognizing his contributions to city government during that decade When Kelleher retired he became mayor once again serving until his death on 3 November 2005 It is now commonly accepted that Longmont has been associated with Naval service since before it even had a city government!
