Longmont, a small town in Weld County, Colorado, was founded on July 24, 1879. It became a census-designated place (CDP) on October 15, 1984. The population of Longmont was 391 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Longmont were farmers who started arriving in the area during the 1860s and 1870s. By 1880, there were only a handful of families living in Longmont. However, by 1890 Longmont had come to be known as an agricultural center due to its vast acreage of irrigated farmland and its proximity to the Milk River Valley. In 1903, construction began on what would eventually become City Hall—the first building in what is now Longmont. At that time, the town consisted of just six homes and about fifty people lived hereabouts. Over time, however, city hall grew into one of the largest civic institutions in Longmont with a population of over 1,000 residents by 1930. In 1960s and 1970sLongmont experienced rapid growth as an outdoor recreation destination following two large Victory Garden festivals which took place there each year. In 2002-2003Longmountain Park was added to the community boundaries making it an all-encompassing park that offers hiking/biking trails; playground; tennis courts; basketball court;and picnicking areas among other features
Longmont was founded in 1876 by John Long, a Denverite. The town today is located in southwestern Colorado and is the county seat of Larimer County. In 1876, Longmont was one of the first towns to be established in what would become Colorado. The town originated from a group of men who had come to Kansas Territory to prospect for gold. They were met with resistance from the local Native Americans, so they decided to settle on the edge of an agricultural area that stretched from Fort Collins to Pueblo. The first post office in Longmont was established in 1879. By 1886, there were over 100 residents living in Longmont. In 1925, the Weld County Courthouse moved into new building and became known as the Longmont courthouse complex. Over time, many businesses have been built within the boundaries of Longmont including a grocery store, dry goods store and bank. In 2009, construction began on a shopping mall called Plaza at Four Corners which will include an arena and several other retail buildings
