Longmont is a small city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 17,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Weld County. The city is located on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains and has a population density of . The first people to live in Longmont were two brothers, David and Solomon Slatkin, who settled there in 1868. They supplemented their income by selling goods from their farmstead to travelers on the Old Colorado Trail. In 1870, they built a log cabin on what is now US Highway 24A. Longmont is a town in the U.S. state of Colorado, located in the Mountain West region. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Longmont County and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Longmont was made byDaniel Boone in 1776 as a small cabin on Horseshoe Mesa west of present-day Longmont. A post office was established in 1802, and for many years it served both Longmont and Defiance Springs, about 10 miles to the east across Spring Creek valley. In 1879, a railroad reached Longmont through nearby Clear Creek Valley; however, no railroads ran through town until 1907 when an incorporation drive began to build a road from Commerce City to connect with Interstate 25 south of town. The townsite was platified in 1912 under act 7 of Pueblo County commissioners which designated it as an incorporated city using current boundaries which include most of downtown and much of north end annexed since then by newer neighborhoods east and west of Broadway Boulevard (formerly known as Main Street). In 1950, Boulder-based National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) built its transmitters near present-day Telluride Airport and used them to broadcast live programming from coast to coast; this helped bring attention to local radio stations KUSA and KOA that were not yet licensed or owned by NBC.
