The history of Longmont begins with the construction of the first post office in 1870. In 1907, longmont became a city and has since grown to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colorado Springs and Centennial Park. Longmont, Colorado is a small city located in southern Colorado. The population was 12,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Weld County. Heading east from Longmont are Rocky Mountains and to the south lies the Animas Valley. On October 15, 1871, silver was discovered on Longmont Mesa by James Wickersham. This event started what would be called "The Silver Rush" in western Colorado because so much silver was found that it drove down prices for goods made of other elements such as gold and lead. By 1870, silver had reached $50 perounce in price per unit and mining operations were taking place all around Longmont Mesa and Chimney Rock hillsides. The first post office in Longmont opened on November 3rd, 1872 with Wickersham as its first executive director. In 1907, work began on a new dam which would raise water levels to create Glenwood reservoir downstream from townspeople started concerns about possible flooding if the dam failed; however engineers decided against building any more dams until better science could be developed about their potential effects on local water supplies. In 1912-13 an agreement was made between various communities upstream from Glencairn Dam (now Glenwood Reservoir) to share costs associated with levee improvement projects should they fail due to floods or other causes; this led to long-term cooperation between these communities when it came time for projects like maintenance or rehabilitation of flood control infrastructure century later. In 1964 two brothers named Stanislaus Fenton became owners of mineral rights adjoining property known as Slagel Rancho although they never developed it as part of their business interests but rather leased it back to local officials who operated it as nature reserves managed by the National Park Service until 1984 when ownership passed back into private hands leaving Slagel Rancho open for visitors only during certain months each year while park staff looked after thingsinternal tours were allowed during off season periods).
