Longmont is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 10,725 at the 2010 census. Longmont is the second most populous municipality in Weld County after Greeley. It is bordered by the towns of Aspen and Lafayette to the north, Westminster to the east, and Thornton to the south. The first permanent settler in what became Longmont was James A. Hite on January 1, 1876. He named it after his birthplace in Virginia – Loudoun County – but no one knows why he chose that name or when he made it official. By 1880, there were nine settlers in what would become Longmont; all except Hite had come from Virginia. The railroad arrived in 1885 and changed everything: people started moving away from rural America for new opportunities near big cities like Denver and Boulder. In 1907 Mayor John Witherspoon persuaded the Little Rock Hotel Company to open a hotel in Longmont; this began a long tradition of downtown business activity which continues even today. In 1920 Jerald Cavanaugh opened The Gilded Cage as one of Longmont's earliest tourist attractions for visitors interested in ancient jewelry and other antiquity. Over time more hotels were built (eighth postwar addition being Holiday Inn Express Tower), making Longmont one of perhaps seventy-five metropolitan areas nationwide with malls oversized enough to accommodate them (and also making shopping easier than ever for everyone). In recent decades much has been done to keep downtown alive through city planning efforts led by Mayor Wayne Allyn Root and City Council members Greg Brockman and Betsy Stapleton; many small businesses have closed or relocated due to these initiatives although some remain—chief among them Joltney’s Smokehouse & Pubbakery which has been located on Main Street since 1978.
