Lafayette is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,287 at the 2010 census. It has been growing rapidly since its incorporation as a town in 2007. Lafayette is located on the eastern edge of the Front Range National Park and is close to both Denver and Fort Collins. The first settlers in what is now Lafayette were French Canadians who arrived in 1824. They named their new settlement after General Lafayette, who had fought for France during the Napoleonic Wars. By 1851, Lafayette had a population of 350 people and was growing rapidly thanks to railroad construction and other businesses that developed there. In 1907, the city of Greeley incorporated as a result of an act by the Colorado Legislature which merged several smaller towns in Weld County into one larger municipality. In 2007, Lafayette became part of the newly formed City of Aurora as it consolidated its own government with that city’s municipalities including Westminster and Thorntonville. This consolidation led to increased business opportunities for residents within Aurora while also increasing infrastructure needs such as new roads and sidewalks within the boundaries of both cities.
